Washington state lawmakers pass gay marriage bill

Washington state lawmakers voted to approve gay marriage Wednesday, setting the stage for the state to become the seventh in the nation to allow same-sex couples to wed.

The action comes a day after a federal appeals court declared California’s ban on gay marriage unconstitutional, saying it was a violation of the civil rights of gay and lesbian couples.

The Washington House passed the bill on a 55-43 vote. Supporters in the public viewing galleries stood and cheered as many on the Democratic side of the House floor hugged after the vote.

The state Senate approved the measure last week, and the bill now goes to Democratic Gov. Chris Gregoire, who is expected to sign it into law next week.

Gregoire watched the vote in the wings with the bill’s sponsor, Sen. Ed Murray, who is gay and has sponsored gay rights legislation for years. Murray said the vote marked "a day that will be remembered in the history of this state."

Gregoire issued a statement after the vote, saying it was "a major step toward completing a long and important journey to end discrimination based on sexual orientation."

Democratic Rep. Jamie Pedersen, a gay lawmaker from Seattle who also has sponsored gay rights bills for several years, said that he and his partner have been grateful for the rights that exist under the state’s domestic partnership laws but such protections are "a pale and inadequate substitute for marriage."

Several Republican amendments were rejected, including one that would have added private businesses and individuals, such as bakers and photographers, to the exemption in the measure that doesn’t require religious organizations or churches to perform marriages and doesn’t subject them to penalties if they don’t marry gay or lesbian couples.

If homosexuality were normal, none of us would be here.

The hits keep coming. I doubt that the 10th Amendment had this in mind. Our poor country.

OK, so this goes to the governor's desk and she signs it. Then the people will have a referendum that will annull it. Then some judge will say that the WA state constitution is "unconstitutional".

And the wheels on the bus go round and round.

After the 9th Circus decision on Prop 8,the traditional (real) marriage supporters may wonder why they should even bother voting at all...

Eventually some state somewhere in this country the gays will win one.....law of probability and all....whether it's from people feeling their votes don't matter,so why bother.....or just a case of the gays catching enough people not paying attention at the time....

Since Reagan Dunn came out in support of gay marriage he has been dropped from at least FIVE Republican Party Lincoln Day Dinners scheduled over the next two months. It looks like his bid for AG may be gone before it got rolling.

or if 71% of faggots are known to be infected with HIV/AIDS, then why are straight people subsidizing the whole cost of this disease?

The action comes a day after a federal appeals court declared California’s ban on gay marriage unconstitutional, saying it was a violation of the civil rights of gay and lesbian couples.

Prop 8 didn't ban gay marriages - gays can still get married, all they have to do is find a partner of the opposite sex, get a marriage license and they too can get married. The same requirements for all marriages, since the institution was created. NOTHING in that state constitutional amendment BANNED anything, all it did was help courts understand the plain language definition of 'marriage.' It is an union of a man and a woman in matrimony.

But of course, the MSM can't help themselves, because it sounds a whole lot worse if we 'banned' gay marriage, if we somehow forbid gay people from getting married. Californians understood what they were voting for when they passed it - plain, unaltered and unalterable language as to what the word marriage means. Only in these times of activist courts is it required to put a flippin' dictionary definition into a constitution.

They say it’s normal because it’s “nature” at work. Therefore it’s somehow natural.

Just because an aberration or disfunction occurs, in nature, doesn’t make it “natural” or “normal” by any stretch.

Normal means what is overwhelmingly the norm, the standard, what is expected, what you’d generally bet the house on, and by 98 to 2, heterosexuality IS NORMAL and homosexuality will always be abnormal.

Mathematically speaking heterosexuality is the overwhelming norm as well.

Didn’t work that way here. We tried to put it on the ballot, way more than enough signatures to make it happen and the Legislature (93%) D ejected the ballot measure, the whole issue was entirely anticonstitutional!

The ultimate decision came down to a 3-3 split in the MA supreme court .
That was also entirely unconstitutional, the deciding vote was cast by The ranking member of the SJC who was a friend of the opposing attorney and had been a supporter of glesn for many years.
Google Brian Camenker and massresistance.org for the details. I am tired and I have forgotten the details.... Goodwin vs whomever

The whole thing was an abomination but Romney capitulated.
He could have ordered the Town Clerks to refuse to issue the licenses but Fat Dead Ted had his boot on Romney’s throat and he caved.

It was the most disgusting act of judicial tyranny ever.
Yet the entire country went on to watch the Simpson’s and accept it as truth!

I abhor this state and the dim wits who reside here.
Can’t wait to leave!

"Washington state is so blue it’s almost purple."

The east side of the state was always conservative but the west side could out vote us because the biggest population is around the Seattle area. Sad thing is though for the last 5 yrs or so I have seen the east side going liberal. Gay parade, gay clubs in the schools etc;
