It wasnt just rapper M.I.A. who got into hot water for her actions during the Super Bowl. Republican senatorial candidate Pete Hoekstra stirred the pot with a political ad that featured an Asian woman speaking broken English, sparking immediate protests from Democrats and civil rights groups.
During the halftime show, M.I.A. made an obscene gesture, extending her middle finger. Both the NFL and NBC, which broadcast the show, have apologized for the offense.
Hoekstra's campaign ad was broadcast only in Michigan, where the former congressman and unsuccessful gubernatorial candidate is seeking the GOP nomination to run against Sen. Debbie Stabenow, a Democrat seeking her third term. Hoekstra, a conservative, is seen as ahead in the three-way primary battle for his party's nod.
The 30-second ad, filmed in California, begins with the sound of a gong accompanying the Asian woman as she rides her bicycle on a path lined by rice paddies. She stops pedaling, smiles into the camera, then breaks into broken English.
Thank you, Michigan Senator Debbie Spenditnow. Debbie spends so much American money. You borrow more and more from us. Your economy get very weak. Ours get very good. We take your jobs. Thank you, Debbie Spenditnow, she says.

The scene with the girl on the bike seemed to be set in rural China; we're lucky she spoke English as well as she did.
The 'rats just didn't like the message.
The ad would have been more effective if she spoke Chinese and had English subtitles. I don’t know who the hell advises republican politicians, but they are complete idioits.
The actress sounds American.
So rather than film an ad in Michigan employing local actors and film crews, he chose to outsource his ad about the threat to Michigan workers to California?

It's kind of obvious that the "controversial" figure in the ad is a young Chinese-American actress who is playing the role of (Communist) Chinese lady riding a bicycle in China. Her English is unaccented, much better than what one would expect from the person she is playing.
The Asian-American spokesperson quoted by the L. A. Slimes should be happy that this young Chinese-American woman has an opportunity for a prominent, if brief, role where she can get noticed by a wide Super Bowl audience, rather than quibble over an ungrammatical word or two in the script.
"Debbie Spenditnow": not a bad nickname.

And again I ask, why outsource the ad to CA? Couldn’t they have filmed a “Chinese” factory owner at a Michigan location using Michigan based actors and film crews?
