A Newark man died after a tussle with a former high school wrestler he tried to rob early Saturday, NBC New York has learned.
Law-enforcement sources told NBC New York that 30-year-old Gian Davis approached two men near Bloomfield Avenue at about 1:15 a.m. and asked for change.
When the men said "no," he then asked to borrow a cell phone, grabbed it and tried to run off with it, sources said.
One of the men lunged to get the phone back and Davis put him in a headlock, according to sources. Then, sources say the other man, a former high school wrestler, pulled Davis off his friend and put the would-be robber in a headlock.
It was strong enough that Davis apparently choked to death, sources familiar with the investigation said.
A source said the two men called police and then stayed on the scene until authorities arrived. Davis was pronounced dead at the hospital.
A medical examiner will determine the cause of death.
Tom Fennelly, chief assistant Essex County prosecutor, would only confirm that an investigation is ongoing.
No charges have been filed against the former wrestler or his friend. Their names have not been released.
Fennelly said they are cooperating with the investigation.
Davis had prior arrests for aggravated assault and theft. He was released from his last stint in jail on July 22.
Picked the wrong guy to rob. That said I am not sure that the victim will not face legal charges for using excessive force.
It’s obvious that we need headlock control laws, and we need them now.
Good riddance.
The robber’s mistake was that he attacked an armed man...the victim had TWO of them...arms, that is.
2 points!
They are saying that the robber was from Newark but I see no mention of what town the robbery attempt took place in.
Bloomfield Ave. runs from Newark all the way past Caldwell with a lot of towns in between. (10 to 12 mi.)
The ethnic makeup changes as you get out of Newark & go further west. It would be interesting to know where this took place,or did I miss something.
If your on the ground with a wrestler, your toast.
"Not like THAT, like THIS. What happened to your form, man? See how I am getting that proper facial shade of purple?"
He should have used a sleeper hold which cuts off blood to the brain instead of a choke hold which cuts off the airway.
No such thing as a “sleeper hold” (and yes, I’m a former wrestler). It’s still a form of choke hold, and cutting off blood flow to the brain will make one first pass out, and if held longer, can result in brain damage and then death.
By the way, we’re talking mere seconds here....it takes far less to kill with that hold, if done properly, than most would ever believe.
Absolutely. Now, the taxpayers won't have to write checks to rehabilitate him.
Sympathy.
Found in the dictionary between Shiite and syphilis.
The wrestler cleared an hundred unsolved crimes and prevented a thousand more.
Give him one more wrestling medal.
I think there was some hubbub years ago after a number of black men died because of police choke holds, and there was a suggestion that black people may have a unique vulnerability to such holds. I never saw any clinical rationale, though.
Thanks nickcarraway.

[snip] asked to use one of their cell phones to call a cab... One of the students said he would call a cab for Davis, who then said he wanted to shake the man’s hand in thanks. But instead of a handshake, Davis allegedly grabbed for the phone and started hitting one of the students in the head. The other student intervened and was able to subdue Davis by “placing a hold with both arms to restrain the suspect from further injuring his friend,” ... When the first officers arrived, the report said, the student released Davis, who was “unresponsive.” [/snip]
Not sure what this “allegedly” bs is in there for.

Amen to that! It's the same few people causing all the trouble.
I wish they'd let American Express keep track of criminals instead of the govt!
BEEP!!! A low-life has just approached your property. BEEP!
The victim ... who was having an innocent tussle with the racist youth ... who refused to either make change for him or share their self-indulgent cell phone ... then used excessive force to cause his untimely death ... and deprive society of an outstanding contributing member ... again proving the urgent need for stricter gun control laws!
