Newt To Focus on Southern States (Big Leads for Newt, Tons of Delegates)
Slate ^ | 2-5-2012 | Daniel Politi

Before the results from the Nevada caucuses came in, there were lots of rumors that Newt Gingrich would drop out of the race. But in an unusual post-caucus news conference, the former House speaker made it clear he has no intention of giving up the possibility of being the presidential nominee. No matter how slim. “I am a candidate for president of the United States, I will be a candidate for president of the United States,” Gingrich said. “We will go to Tampa.” He accused Romney’s campaign of starting “the rumor that they believe I will withdraw, which is of course their greatest fantasy.”

........He also made it evident that rumors he was ready to switch to a positive message were mistaken. He quickly accused Mitt Romney of being a “pro-abortion, pro-gun control, pro-tax increase, George Soros-approved candidate of the establishment.” Still, he did lament how “terrible” it is that “the American system is reduced to negative ads,” but recognized “it’s a fact that if you’re not willing to stand and fight then you have to get out of the race.”

Even as Gingrich insists his campaign is a bare-bones operation, a series of strategic meetings that took place over the week in Nevada made it clear “there is now more of a team than Gingrich has let on, with new hires coming on board weekly,” reports the Washington Post. Now Gingrich and his advisers are focusing on the math, analyzing how the former House speaker could clear a path to the 1,144 delegates needed to claim the nomination. A big part of that strategy will involve southern states and the campaign will place particular focus on his native Georgia as well as Tennessee, which vote on Super Tuesday, as well as Alabama, Mississippi, Missouri and Louisiana, reports the Post........

When Gingrich was asked about the report, he said: “If the choice is between Obama and Romney, then there is no choice.”

The blunt truth is refreshing real change.

A wise new FReeper, Floppy Disk, posted a suggestion yesterday on a different thread that I hope finds its way to Newt's ear:

(excerpt) Newt needs to attack Romney's one strength. His aura of "electability." Romney likes to ridicule. Newt can do that same. Romney is such a clownish figure, it would be easy to present him as such. The most effect ad Newt could run is 60 seconds of Romney stuttering and fumbling around, plus his statements like "Corporations are people my friend," "I like being able to fire people," and "I don't care about the really poor." Then simply fade in the text "Mitt Romney is electable..." "Oh really?"

Then Newt should focus his campaign again on his own strength - that he is a change agent. His message should be that electing Romney will change parties but not policies in Washington. The bailouts will continue. The spending will continue. The gravy train will continue. This is our last chance to right the ship, and only Newt will change business as usual.

That is the winning message.

GODSPEED NEWT GINGRICH.

There are similar trends from last week’s primary in Florida. In every county Mittens won, the turnout was down significantly from 2008. In the counties that Gingrich won, the turnout was up noticeably from four years ago. Of course, Newt’s “victories” came in the so-called “Cracker Counties” of northern Florida and the Panhandle. The bad news for Mitt is that those Florida counties are very similar to those in other southern states that will vote on Super Tuesday.

Based on my very rough calculations, Romney can’t secure the nomination between now and March 6th. He will extend his delegate lead, but that gap will close considerably if Gingrich can carry those southern states on Super Tuesday.

As a result, you will be hearing a lot of media coverage telling us that “Newt is finished” between now and then. It will be interesting to see what resources Romney puts into those southern states prior to Super Tuesday. But the current crop of media reports is clearly aimed at discouraging “crackers” (including yours truly) from voting in the primary in March.

It’s really a shame that Newt didn’t make the ballot in Virginia which was a sure win for him :/

Texas alone is worth more delegates than Florida and Virginia combined. As of right now it’s not winner take all, but since the court pushed back our primary date, it could make made into winner take all again.

Seems like it would go to WTA if it is after April 1 IAW RNC rules?

Wednesday, February 1, 2012 2:05 AM CST
“ Before next Wednesday, however, primary voting could be pushed back to April 17 or even later. A general agreement must be reached by Feb. 6 for an April 3 primary to happen. “

I’ve been wondering about our delegates - with all the redistricting crapola. Does anyone know how Newt’s polling here, as of today?

Can we get Charlie Daniels to play “The Devil Went Down in Georgia” for Newt’s rallies there? Gotta love the South!
