Willie Nelson sold out a 1,400 seat theater in Lorain, Ohio, on Sunday (Jan. 29) in support of Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D - OH). As a result of redistricting, Kucinich has been forced into a primary battle with fellow Democrat Mary Kaptur, whose campaign funding was recently reported as almost seven times that of Kucinich.
"Dennis and I go a long way back," Willie said before the show (quote via the Chronicle-Telegram). "Anything I've been interested in seeing done, he said, 'What can I do to help?'"
The pair first met in 2002, after the Congressman's Prayer for America speech, in which he called the Patriot Act unconstitutional and cautioned that military spending was creating a "permanent war economy." Upon hearing this declaration, Willie was compelled to contact the politician.
"[Willie's] a man of the people," says Kucinich. "Very plain spoken, very sincere, big heart, great sense of humor [and] a pretty good golfer. He's an amazing guy, and he's a good friend."
The country legend also cited the Congressman's position in favor of decriminalizing marijuana use as an issue he supports, saying he'd rather have American soldiers guarding the Mexican border than fighting abroad. You may recall, the Redheaded Stranger was arrested in 2010 for possession of pot.
"Whatever Dennis wants to do, I'm here to help," Willie added.
Hung Jury.
I filed my Willie Nelson music years ago with my Bruce Springsteen music...in the circular file.

I was always friendly with a probation officer who covered our region and he always talked a good game regarding personal responsibility and consequences. In 2004 I saw an article in the local paper which stated he had something to do with the county Democratic committee. I mentioned to him that I had seen the article and he told me was strongly supporting Dennis Kucinich for President. I suddenly felt I should slowly retreat from his presence without showing him my back. In that moment, I realized he really believed in collective responsibility and that society should absorb the blame for causing an individual’s bad behavior. While I have maintained a cordial relationship with him, I will probably never again discuss anything of substance with him. I felt I had found my foot resting on the head of a coiled viper. On a level; I suppose my reaction is harsh and unreasonable, but on a deeper plane, my instinct feels prudent and meet.
I'll take the Fifth... ;)
I think he’s been enhancing his weed with something a little more hard-core. He dun did lost his mind!
After voicing his support for Kucinich, Mr Nelson proclaimed loudly that he had the munchies and ran off to the local Krispy Kreme.
In that picture I can imagine Dennis turning his head suddenly to the left, looking slightly down and, in the voice of Mel Brookes, saying “Hello boys, did you miss me?”
Willie Nelson has always been a big time liberal and supported Obama in 2008. He’s one of the few liberals in country music. He gets along well with the left-wing
Dixie Chicks.
Further confirmation that a brain isn’t actually needed to be an entertainer.
Hello boys...
Yep, that’s the scene!
