Royal Navy to send HMS Dauntless to Falkland Islands
Telegraph ^ | 31 Jan 2012 | Thomas Harding

Posted on 01/31/2012 8:12:40 AM PST by george76

The Royal Navy’s most sophisticated warship is being sent to the South Atlantic in a move that will send a powerful message to Argentina.

Dauntless will set sail for the Falkland Islands in the coming weeks armed with a battery of missiles that could "take out all of South America's fighter aircraft let alone Argentina's," ...

The Type 45 destroyer is the most advanced anti-aircraft and anti-ballistic ship in the world equipped with 48 Sea Viper missiles and the Sampson radar, which is more advanced than Heathrow air traffic control

The ship is in a league of its own in air defence able to track dozens of multiple targets

"It can shoot down Argentine fighters as soon as they take off from they bases," said another Navy source. "This will give Buenos Aires serious pause for thought."

Oil...Such a three letter word!!!

It will be the death of us all...

HMS Dauntless, Now that’s a ship that has some great lines...

Always liked working with the British Navy...We’d cross over and work with the crews, and some of their folks would come aboard our ship for short stints when I was in the fleet...

Y’all need to build more of these type 45’s!!! Need to read up on this design...

aking the oath looking at a picture of POTUS Nixon....

In almost any category--as bad as he was--Nixon was an angel compared to the current Commander in Chief.

In point of fact, Nixon was FAR less corrupt than either Johnson or Kennedy...the '60s radicals just crested at that time, and brought him down to show off their power.

Nixon wasn't even a conservative...and he expanded the government and messed up the economy as much as any Democrat.

The liberal Democrats most virulent spite though, I believe, is reserved for Moderate Republicans... (as they appear to be gutless liberals)(hello Mitt Romney!).

They are now THE Establishment--in Academia, Media, and politically...keeping Obama in place.

As a result of efforts to achieve economies of scale, the PAAMS command system shares a common architecture with that of the Type 45 destroyer. Consequently, the PAAMS uses the same Windows 2000 based command consoles as the Type 45. This extends the use of Windows for Warships outside the Royal Navy to the French and Italian navies as well.

On 28 January 2009, the PAAMS was given its official designation of Sea Viper by the Royal Navy.

Hey, no problems, the Sea Viper missiles are Windows based...:^)

We (US Navy) learned a lot from this conflict...

Damage control, from what I recall, was a specialty rating in the British Navy...Whereas the US Navy was trying to get “everyone” up to speed on the concept...

This battle increased the pace, and every new recruit began a regimen of classroom study (film and lessons learned from the Fauklands War) and practical damage control simulators that included flooding, fire, rescue, de-watering drills etc etc etc...

Refresher training for those of us out in the fleet was a regular part of our training, no one was above it...

I believe everyone benefitted from it, as apparent in the damage done and saving of the ships USS Stark, USS Roberts, Iwo Jima, etc etc etc...

BTW, I lost two close friends on the Stark...That was not a banner day for us...But that is another story for another day...

and Oil. The Falklands recently has been the site of oil exploration and estimates run into the 8 plus billion barrels.

I was surprised the Argentinians did as well as they did. The one area in which they fouled up imo was to use green recruits for the fighting. Even those new trainees didn’t completely just fold but they could not compete with the British professionals.

“I always thought “HMS Dreadnaught” was a good name.”

HMS Thunderchild is cool, too. (obscure War of the Worlds reference) :)

It is a great name. I guess I could look it up, but I seem to recall that some famous sailing ship from Britain was also named “Dauntless”.

The big thing I remember from the Falklands was the adoption of RN style flash gear.

I agree, Nixon was a saint compared to the last few dems we have had. But, at the time, he was the nightly news bad guy and that is all we had.

I’m fron Texas and I’ll tell you right now that there aren’t many snakes as crooked as LBJ was. That man could have taught the devil a few tricks. Crooked doesn’t come close to describing him.

Actually, I think the Falklands have oil...

Also the reason they can’t leave the Falklands alone is the fact that they HAVE problems at home and need something to distract the people...

Fortunately, the Argentinian air force was never really rebuilt. It’s fighters are 8 Mirage III and 14 upgraded IAI Nesher/Finger and the bombers are 7 Mirage 5 and 34 A4 skyhawks.

I was working as a contractor in Argentina when the last dustup over the Falklands occurred in the 80s.

At the time, Argentina’s economy was crap and el presidente at the time needed a distraction. He tried to start something with Chile over the southern border, but they wouldn’t bite. So, he turned to a minor, non-incident in the Falklands as the reason to go to war over the Falklands.

A little background: At the time, the Brits had been in control of the Falklands for about 150 years. And, before engaging the Argentines, the Brits asked the Falkland Islanders if they wanted to be British or Argentine. They all said British.

So, they went to war. While Argentina got in a lucky shot with an Exocet missile, ultimately, Britain sent them packing with their tail between their legs.

Unfortunately for the Argentines, the government kept lying to them about the progress of the war right up to the point they were defeated. And, the defeat stunned the people.

So, I’m surprised that they are gearing up for round 2. Although Britain has had control of the Falklands for nearly 200 years, now, the Argentines still try to claim them and refuse to give up and accept that they lost the islnds a long time ago.

Someday, reality will set in in Buenos Aires. But, apparently, not today!

Just last night we watched a special on the QE 2’s last voyage and her history. She was used to transport troops to the Falklands during the war there and had to be retrofitted (?) with reinforced decks for helicopter landing areas (2). It arrived in 16 days. Quite a fascinating program. So it’s especially interesting to see this thread.

I just held my right hand up.

Good practice, since I had to keep my mouth closed for three long years...
