The first ozone hole above the North Pole has been aggravated by extraordinarily cold winter temperatures, say scientists.
Cooling of the ozone layer enhances the effect of ozone-destroying substances such as chlorofluorocarbons - CFC.
A repeated ozone hole above the Arctic is to be expected, say scientists from the KIT Institute of Meteorology and Climate Research.
About a year ago, the scientists detected that ozone degradation above the Arctic for the first time reached an extent comparable to that of the ozone hole above the South Pole.
At a level of around 13 miles above the ground, 80 per cent of the ozone was lost, potentially exposing people on Earth's surface to harmful ultraviolet-B rays from the sun, which can cause sunburn and skin cancer.
According to the study, occurrence of the Arctic ozone hole was mainly due to the extraordinarily cold temperatures in the ozone layer that is located at about 18 km height in the stratosphere, i.e. the second layer of the earth's atmosphere.
There, chlorine compounds originating from chlorofluorocarbons and other pollutants are converted chemically at temperatures below -78°C.
These chemical conversion products attack the ozone layer and destroy it.
If the trend for colder temperatures in the stratosphere observed in the past decades continues, repeated occurrence of an Arctic ozone hole has to be expected.

If it wasn’t for the ozone “hole” we would not have a change in seasons like we do.
Doubt me?
Question: Where does the wind that blows from the north (in all directions, toward the south away from the pole) come from?
Answer: From ultracold air dipping thought the ozone hole. (i.e. the upper atmosphere plunges downward, and spreads out, causing the wind at the surface level to blow from the north in all directions.
If this did not happen, there would be no large change in seasons, no winds circulating in large fronts as the seasons change.
"....wanna see my fake gun and bullets?"
Global warming turned out to be a failure, so they are going back to global cooling.
They tried it in the 70s. It might work better now.
Cooling, warming. Anything for more grant money.
Fire up those SUV’s!;)

Not if you recently stayed at a Holiday Inn.

You have it backwards.
I get such a kick out of you pet photo commentatory, Doogle. Thanks for making me smile. :)
I will never forget how it seemed that each time the warmists headed off on a media trip to highlight global warming, they would get snowed and frozen in.

I know for a fact that the CFC known as R-12, the primary existing refrigerant before some professor at UC California Irvine got a Noble prize for saying that CFCs were destroying the upper atmosphere ozone layer, weighs more than air... about six times more than air. That means that R-12 released into the atmosphere drops like a rock.
Shipyard workers need to know this because refrigerants released inside a ships hull would push out - replace - air held inside the hull and kill anyone not equipped with breathing apparatus.
To #8 Tex Con Man: Please bring back a Moon rock for my granddaughter when you return (re “I wanna be the first on my block to a drop a V-8 into a Chevy Volt).
“To the Moon, Alice, to the Moon” (Moon being the name of your Volt).
Put a 409 in that sucker and you can go to Mars and back in a day. Skirts and baby-moon spinners would be a nice touch too.
HOLY SMOKES!
I actually remember that middle one!
I actually remember that middle one!
Excellent memory! It was dated December 24, 1979
The Arctic hole is a Winter occurrence, the Antarctic a Summer(their Winter) occurrence. Due to the tilt of the Earth in its orbit, both are periods of little sunlight at the pole.
No sunlight, no Ozone.
“Skirts and baby-moon spinners “
Bubble Skirts, and a California Rake!
:)...if it hit’s me right, I post it
