........."China is expected to complete its first exploration of the moon in 2010, and will establish a base on the moon as we did in the South Pole and the North Pole," said the program's chief scientist, Ouyang Ziyuan, according to the official People's Daily.

'For the Benefit of Humanity'

Beijing Morning Post quoted him as elaborating that the base would be used to "mine [the moon's] riches for the benefit of humanity."

Reminds me of the way folks ridiculed GWB when he said Iran was a major threat.

China plans to be on the moon by 2020.

People say the moon belongs to all of us, but China (which is already gaining monopoly on earth's minerals) will say "Finder's keepers"

Jeepers. Thanks for the links. Help get the word out to everyone you know. LSM will be ridiculing Newt night and day over this, and most people won’t be researching it.

Yes they will, and I think that is a real threat.

Newt was spot on with Greta about renewing space exploration while captivating creativity through the private businesses. I loved his comments toward the end of that conservation.

Agreed. I am just not happy about China having a base on the moon.

They`ll really have to steal a lot stuff from us and the Russians

Don`t know about the Russians, but the U.S. has shown in the past it`s quite willing to hand over whatever delivery system technology the Chinese will want... just as it did during the 1990s in exchange for a $100k donation to the DNC.

NASA Radar Finds Ice Deposits at Moon's North Pole; Additional evidence of water activity on moon
It's estimated there could be at least 1.3 trillion pounds (600 million metric tons) of water ice

Numerous craters near the poles of the Moon have interiors that are in permanent sun shadow. These areas are very cold and water ice is stable there essentially indefinitely.

Oh good. Shall I send them my address for the location to send my checks?

I've said it before, but space will continue to a game too expensive for most private industry until you solve problem #1...spending $5000 to get a postage stamp into orbit is not cost effective. There has to be found a cheaper way to get a payload into orbit, than mounting it on top of a technological skyscraper full of explosive fuel.

I've heard postulated an EM system in a high altitude area like Nepal could accelerate payloads down hundreds mile-long tracks before being shot skyward at orbital velocity. Don't know if it would work...but we've got to get past the point of tying a billion dollar bomb to our a$$ and lighting the fuse.

If we can get to where a truckload can be sent into orbit for the same rate it costs to ship it coast to coast, then we'll get space industry, colonization, interplanetary commerce, the whole thing. People reading the "want ads" will see them separated into "local jobs" and "off-world jobs".

I know one thing, at this critical stage of our nation's future, none of us will see anyone going "where no man has gone before" without supportive conservative leadership. We won't have space delayed, it will be space denied...and that's if the country survives at all.

Go Newt.

They have to actually get there before any claims could be made. And besides, we can always say “it’s ours, and the flags are there to prove it.”

All they do is steal or wait for an idiot like Clinton to hand it over.

Didn’t they just ridicule Newt for mentioning a plan to go to the moon?

Can we afford to let China have the moon alone?

Thinking one step ahead the moon is the perfect launch place for a trip to Mars. Gravity there is roughly 17% of the Earth. No atmosphere to fight through either. Bigger payload and less fuel. I suspect theres lots more to mine there.

I presume that would be "American Idol" or some other 21st century version of bread & circuses.

"I’m not sure there’s much for China to mine. Maybe some deuterium? There’s no metal core, no hydrological systems, no vulcanism... They could mine water and get hydrogen fuel I suppose. That’s if they can get there. They’ll really have to steal a lot of stuff from us and the Russians.

Plenty of energy (sunlight) and water is all that is needed. What you fail to realize is that a moon-base is THE stepping-stone to asteroid mining, which has everything the moon lacks. Kick a couple of nickel-iron and water chunks into lunar orbit (I don't "really" like the idea of putting such chunks in NEA (near-earth-orbit)). Manufacture what can be superiorly controlled in zero-g near the asteroids, and what needs gravity on the lunar surface. Export finished products to earth (after all, "it's all downhill" from there).

"The number one potential for making money is ....... tourism."

NOT!

the Chinese, those wonderful benefactors of North Korea, are expanding their rape of natural resources beyond their earth bases in Central America, Asia and Africa, and to the moon...and all for “the benefit of humanity”

Chinese-speaking humanity, that is

They may build the moon’s first prison camp
