I've heard postulated an EM system in a high altitude area like Nepal could accelerate payloads down hundreds mile-long tracks before being shot skyward at orbital velocity. Don't know if it would work...but we've got to get past the point of tying a billion dollar bomb to our a$$ and lighting the fuse.
If we can get to where a truckload can be sent into orbit for the same rate it costs to ship it coast to coast, then we'll get space industry, colonization, interplanetary commerce, the whole thing. People reading the "want ads" will see them separated into "local jobs" and "off-world jobs".
I know one thing, at this critical stage of our nation's future, none of us will see anyone going "where no man has gone before" without supportive conservative leadership. We won't have space delayed, it will be space denied...and that's if the country survives at all.
Go Newt.
The biggest challenge for any lunar settlement is that the moon is so inhospitable for basic human existence that the cost of supporting human life there will be enormous. There's no way any ambitions about long-term settlement can work out unless this substantial obstacle can be addressed.
And it will cost even more to get material to the moon. But let's not be rational about this. A true patriot demands a moon base.
