Unbeknownst to the press, President Obama met this evening with former president George H.W. Bush and his son, former Florida governor Jeb Bush in the Oval Office.
White House officials did not list the meeting on the president's schedule but released a photo through Flickr and Twitter.
According to the date and time stamp on the photo, it was taken shortly after 5 p.m. That's about the time Obama returned to the White House from a fundraiser at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel.
White House officials did not immediately respond to questions about the subject of the meeting and its exclusion from Obama's public schedule.

While the USSR finally fell during Bushs term, it was Reagans policies, which to Bushs credit he continued, that caused it. Before Reagan, no one, not even Bush, was talking about the crazy idea of actually taking the fight right to the Soviets. Everyone in both parties was in love with the detente, mutually-assured destruction garbag.
Yes, Reagan's policies pushed Soviet Communism over the edge (although, if it hadn't been for the discovery of those big oil fields it might have gone over in the 1970s).
However, Bush was the one who helped it glide to a relatively soft landing. I lived in DC during the Summer of 1991, remember a LOT of speculation - and worry - that with the August Coup attempt against Gorbachev there wouldn't just be a return to a hardline regime ... but a major civil war in a nation loaded with nukes.
I remember seeing the Pentagon parking lots full in the middle of the night during that mess (liked to close down Ireland's Own in Alexandria before heading back to my apt in DC), and know full well what such really means. I'm convinced that years from now we're going to find out that the world came pretty frikkin' close to "the brink" and it was the hand of the first Bush Administration that kept things steady and stable as things sorted themselves out.

It appears that we now live in a country governed by an oligarchy of sorts. Actually, its more like a small ruling coalition of those who went to the same schools or have wealth and who are essentially impervious to the rules they want to makeThey consider themselves "Aristocracy - to the Manor Born" - born to rule...like the Aristocracy of old England pre-WW1.
WE are the Downstairs servants -
How DARE upstarts like Newt and Sarah presume to rise to their level. They didn't go to Harvard. They didn't go to Yale. They are not from the "anointed ones." They're naught but commoners.

This is a little sickening. George HW is a good man and was a war hero.
He may not be conservative enough for us and I don’t much like him meeting with Obama, but get some perspective around here, please.

Dubya was a terrible President who left this country in such straits that Obama was the consequence. The very fact that his name has been verbotten in the 2010 elections as well as the current GOP primary is striking though not surprising.

Dittos. Major dittoes.
Sadly, it’s become cute and cool around here to trash the Bushes. Obama doesn’t even have to do it, we do it for him.
Both Bush presidents made some mistakes but they were both staunch patriots who loved their country and tried to do right by it.
Some of the comments here are disgusting.

Spot on gif!! Never ceases to amaze me that some bots on FR whine about Odumbo’s “free” healthcare plans but are totally cool with Dubya’s “free” pills for granny.

“There is only one reason this photo is out...they all agreed to release it.”
Smokescreen canard for something nefarious going down or are they trying to psych out the tea party & Gingrich...or both. Earlier this week there were rumors of Jeb being foisted to replace Romney if needed (undeclared financial stuff about to pop?)...who was that supposed to scare? Hillary?
All the more reason to support Gingrich.

Kind of agree but we cannot discount the fact that their leadership of do-goodery and political appeasement greased the pipe for our current state.

They probably didn’t ‘agree to meet’ with Obama.
They probably asked for the meeting and, although Obama was uncomfortable about it, it would be very rude even for him to refuse to meet with a former president.
I don’t know why they wanted to meet with the Zero but it was probably some perfectly innocent reason.
