Politicos homepage top headline is The right drops a bomb on Newt featuring photos of Ann Coulter, Tom DeLay, Elliot Abrams and Matt Drudge.
Just like in December, the rise of Newt has caused panic in Republican circles.
In December the charge was led by National Review, and now its being led by Matt Drudge, as reflected in this image from Marooned in Marin:
For several days Drudge has been running almost around-the-clock negative banners against Newt, hyping negatives and burying news which contradicts the Romney campaign narrative that Newt was anti-Reagan.
Against the anti-Newt crusade stands a wealth of counter-viewpoints of people who were in a position to know and who share very differenct recollections of Newt and Reagan, via Josh Painter in the comments:

Ill add to that Peter Robinson, former Reagan speechwriter, who wrote the historic Berlin Wall address in which President Reagan urged Mikhail Gorbachev to tear down this wall!:
Newt shared the frustrations of many conservatives, including, from time to time, me, that the President permitted the bureaucracy to prove persistently feckless, undermining his programas youll recall if youre of a certain age, conservatives were always insisting that the Presidents staff should let Reagan be Reagan. If Newt mouthed off, giving vent to these frustrations, so be it. He was in Congress. That was, in a sense, his job. And at one time or another, every conservative of any standing felt exasperated or worriedand urged the President not to go soft either on Communism or on our own bureaucracy. Newts comments here place him in the company of William F. Buckley, Jr.WFB vented his frustrations more artfully, but he vented themand Id have thought that for our friends at NR that would be quite good enough.
Drudge has 30 million visits a day on his side. We have history on our side. Make it known.
Update: David Kenner of Foreign Policy magazine:
My thoughts exactly!
BIAS media is not news.
Matt and Mitt
are a perfect fit
Backstabbing twits!
Yep. Took Drudge off my bookmarks and won’t be clicking on his site - ever. Sent an email letting him know. My little email won’t make a dent, but if everybody who used to visit his site tells him they’re stopping — and why — maybe he’ll get the message that RINO’s aren’t welcome...

Presidents are selected, not elected. Gingrich may not be 100% consistent in his conservatism, but he is not beholden to the banks and other corporate interests as Romney and Obama are. What the reasonable voices on the right call “erratic”, “chaotic”, and “undisciplined” is simply an inadequate obeisance to the interests that control both parties.
One of these interests is the media establishment, which includes Drudge. They have much to lose with a Gingrich presidency.
A gay guy was bugging Newt in Iowa, and Newt told him he should vote for someone else. Who knows, maybe that clip is circling around GOProud and riled them up.
Cute!
They did it for a greater cause. I'm thanking Newt - it's because of him, they are FORCED to reveal their pitiful, unpatriotic selves! These deceivers would have preferred to stay in their crib under the blanket. Now their dirty selves are exposed.
Now NEWT is shown to be the bedrock conservative!
It’s much more than that! That antagonizer had no plans of voting for Newt - he was probably from the backstabbing mitt camp.
Yep, Drudge has lost me over his anti-Newt bias. I will NOT read the Drudge Report again. I hope the many million who read the Drudge Report will do the same. He is now irrelevant.
Good points. Drudge’s idiotic attacks make me support Newt even stronger. I am so sick of RINO’s like Romney.
Not that he really cares or that it really matters in the scheme of things but I sent him a little message. I used to visit his site 15-20 times per day, every day. (yes, I am a news junkie). I WILL break the habit, I removed him from my Bookmarks and I have now been 2 DAYS WITHOUT A DRUDGE HIT! But the people at Hot Air are about the same. It gets pretty ugly over there, too. Although I will have to say, even though Ed Morrissey’s Newt bashing has been pretty heavy, he did have a decent post today. The Ethics issue is a non-issue.
I just emailed Fudge Resort:
After many years of clicking on your site for the latest conservative news, I am not going there anymore due to the hamfisted anti-Newt campaign that you have waged in recent days. It is no longer an effective conservative website.
Thanks a lot, traitor. :(
Willard Goering Romney seems to be practicing the scattershot of throwing out all sorts of accusations, distortions and outright lies in the hope that something will stick in the minds of the voters. I would not be surprised to learn that he hired the ad agency that did the "medicare will die on the vine" advert for the demonrats when they ran against the Contract for America.
I would not have voted for leftist Romney before, but now I'm ready to hate the son of a female dog. What a disgusting piece of work is he. Goering Mittens (it is so hard to tell them apart) needs a trip to the woodshed. He will never be president, and he knows it -- but he and the NE Liberal Elites just want to cling to the "power" the demonrats allow them to have, and rather see 0bama elected than allow citizens to have a voice in how we are governed.
I thought he was chip off the old block of his cowardly father who had to search for his brain so it could be washed. George disappeared when Goldwater ran. His son, Brother Willard is 10 times worse -- he not only refused to support Ronald Reagan, he is actively doing the opposite of all that President Reagan taught us to do.
Willard is a RAT many times over. A DemonRAT in Republican clothes, a movie rat (I knew that name was familiar), and a trash-dwelling rat of a candidate. How did he co-opt Drudge? Blackmail? Bribes? I'm curious to know, but since Drudge is off my "read this website" list, I guess I won't.
So much for that bastion of freedom: a free press.
The canard that we must vote republican or face ruin doesn't resonate with me any more. Republicans have been as ruinous to the Republic as Democrats have been.
But seriously, will Newt make any difference?
And what does the media establishment have to loose with Newt?
I too am done with that site. Removed from favorites.
>>what does the media establishment have to loose with Newt?
He’ll attack them relentlessly. He will run against the media with even more passion and viciousness than Nixon. The landscape is very different now, and it will be the undoing of what’s left of the MSM.
I don’t trust Newt fully, but I do think he would “shock and awe” the political establishment- right, left and center. Win or lose, it would be worth it.
That's how he makes money.
Bain is one owner of Clear Channel. Clear Channel stations carry Rush.
They also carry Mark Levin, the most forceful, outspoken Romney critic on the air.
