Dole Goes Nuclear (Against Gingrich 3.0)
National Review Onlie ^ | NRO Staff

Posted on 01/26/2012 10:12:01 AM PST by Windy City Conservative

The Romney campaign sends along a statement by Bob Dole pasted below. Relations between Dole — an establishment figure in the party — and Gingrich were well known to be tense during the 1990s. Here it is:

I have not been critical of Newt Gingrich but it is now time to take a stand before it is too late. If Gingrich is the nominee it will have an adverse impact on Republican candidates running for county, state, and federal offices. Hardly anyone who served with Newt in Congress has endorsed him and that fact speaks for itself. He was a one-man-band who rarely took advice. It was his way or the highway.

Gingrich served as Speaker from 1995 to 1999 and had trouble within his own party. Already in 1997 a number of House members wanted to throw him out as Speaker. But he hung on until after the 1998 elections when the writing was on the wall. His mounting ethics problems caused him to resign in early 1999. I know whereof I speak as I helped establish a line of credit of $150,000 to help Newt pay off the fine for his ethics violations. In the end, he paid the fine with money from other sources.

Gingrich had a new idea every minute and most of them were off the wall. He loved picking a fight with Bill Clinton because he knew this would get the attention of the press. This and a myriad of other specifics helped to topple Gingrich in 1998.

In my run for the presidency in 1996 the Democrats greeted me with a number of negative TV ads and in every one of them Newt was in the ad. He was very unpopular and I am not only certain that this did not help me, but that it also cost House seats that year. Newt would show up at the campaign headquarters with an empty ice-bucket in his hand — that was a symbol of some sort for him — and I never did know what he was doing or why he was doing it.

In my opinion if we want to avoid an Obama landslide in November, Republicans should nominate Governor Romney as our standard bearer. He has the requisite experience in the public and private sectors. He would be a president we could have confidence in.

This all stinks of a community organizer plan. Triangulate, get one faction against the other. Divide and conquer. The enemy is from within.
I have seen the enemy, and his name is Romney.

Joe McCarthy was right.

In 1996 when it became apparent that Dole would probably be the nominee, my wife said we need Newt Gingrich. She’s said the same thing every for years since then.

Dole says he doesn’t know what Newt’s empty ice bucket was for? Bull Crap. Even I remember that congress was so wasteful and antiquated that they still paid people to deliver ice to every congress critters office. They all had ice making fridges I’m their offices! The bucket was a symbol of cutting the bloated government!
That’s why I’m voting for Newt. He was for cutting govt long before the tea party. Dole is a big govt perks kind of guy.

I just finished reading a transcript by Rush Limbaugh about this subject. His memory of those times are like mine, and considerably different than what is linked to on Drudge and stated in your link. Frankly, I have no trust in what many in Congress back then and now say.

Many of those Republicans are still in Congress. They are part of the ongoing problem of business as usual in Washignton, D.C. Under a Republican president, they added over $3 trillion to the federal deficit, shunned conservative policy in favor of Beltway influence-peddling, and so damaged the GOP brand that we lost the majority Gingrich had worked years to forge.

Do you really think I give a damn that Newt’s fabulous colleagues think his reemergence would be a disaster for Republicans? No.

The elections of 2010 were NOT a merit promotion; the Republicans were the only alternative in town!

They are terrified of Newt Gingrich because he has made it plain that business as usual in Washington, D.C., will no longer exist once he is President. The Federal gravy train will no longer be running.

“Hey, Rick, drop out and save this country.”

I hope he does, but Rick was one of those party guys who supported Arlen Specter.

My thought is that Rick Santorum is staying in to help Mitt, and either he or Rubio await the nod from Romney as VP slot, if Romney were to win the nomination. I would expect the other to have a cabinet position or an ambassadorship.

I hate it, but this is what it has become.

In this case, I really want to be proved wrong, but do not expect it.

Is there any kind of tea party support going on? You would think a vast majority of who voted for mccain would newt.

Matt Drudge has 9, count 'em, 9 negative post about Newt at this moment.

Send Matt at "tip" if you like. I have.

I told Matt to say hi to Ann at the next Republican Log Cabin meeting.

“business as usual in Washington, D.C., will no longer exist once he is President. The Federal gravy train will no longer be running.”

Yup.

And we Tea Partiers would do well to remember the scorching Sarah took during the campaign came from ROMNEY’s people.

Romney has the money to pay for these attacks.
Romney’s connections have the money to broadcast these attacks.
Romney is a socialist Democrat by any other name.
Romney has said he is a Progressive, too, and will play ball.

If we don’t listen to the drone of our traitorous media, as Frantzie suggested, we won’t have to hear them foam at the mouth and begin to look crazen in their body-snatching screams against Newt.

The more the ‘insiders’ ‘elite’ ‘establishment’ and their friends in the media squeel about Newt, the more I like him.

Newt is far from a saint, he is frightening the hell out of the progressive marxists the RINOs and the state-run-media.

They have banded together to defeat Newt.

He must be onto something, Newt has my wife and my vote.

Newt has never been my number one choice. I think he is too Liberal. I think he is too Establishment. I think he has character problems.

And even with all that ... the Establishment seems to see him as a major threat to their way of life.

Isn't that interesting?

My guess is that Newt has a tendency to tell people how things really are. I think he's blunt and articulate. I think he sees where the problems are, and I think he might try to explain that to the public.

The Establishment doesn't like that idea one little bit.

I agree with you. He would shake, rattle and roll DC. No, he’s not my #1. He’s a Progressive. I have a hope that he’s had a come to Jesus moment. I also think he sees what his grandchildren’s lives will be like if this country goes the way it’s going now. We will be chipped, asked for our papers, relegated to Soviet high rises and worked like dogs for scraps from our betters. We may be euthanized for the good of all, sterilized to make sure we toil in the fields like good little workers, and even become largely illiterate.

We will see, in other words, 1000 years of darkness.

And Establishment politicians, Davos types, and Soros’ heirs will be pleased.

I wanted Sarah, but Cain was OK by me. Bachmann appeared to be Romney’s lady-in-waiting. Santorum reminds me of the unpopular, shrill, teacher’s pet guy in high school. And Newt’s a real SOB who’ll brawl his way to the top. I want a fighter. Too bad Trump was squeezed out because I know he loves this country, or, what’s left of it.

Whem I really think about what the next President will have to deal with, frankly, I don’t know IF that person can pull us off our present course. 0bama is such a traitor, and no one says Boo, which tells me they’re in on it, even if that means they’ve found horse’s heads in their beds.

So, when I hear these attacks or read about them, whether the money comes from fat wallet Romney or tiny dic* 0bama, I figure I’m listening to a walking STD, and I don’t want that contagion near me.
