I’m sorry for Rick - I liked him. His campaign seems to be shrinking by the hour.

It’s a winner take all state. If you are not in serious contention in the polls, why not move to the next state? Seems like a sensible move to me.

Maybe the meds are starting to take effect.

Megalomania can be treated!

Treatments for megalomania depend upon the underlying condition causing it, but can include medication and psychotherapy. Four conditions are associated with this state, where individuals believe themselves omnipotent, have a deluded sense of possessing extraordinary power, or exhibit grandiosity, which is a view of personal superiority and disdain for others. These conditions are narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) antisocial personality disorder (APD), schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder. Treatment differs in these conditions, and antisocial personality disorder is not presently considered treatable.

Bipolar disorder may have megalomania as a feature when people are in a manic state. Some schizophrenics have delusions of grandiosity, believing they have exceptional power. In these two conditions, states of megalomania and grandiosity are especially dangerous because individuals may make decisions based on a faulty perception of personal power. A schizophrenic might stand in front of a car believing it cannot hit him, and the bipolar person could sleep with numerous people without recognizing the consequences to a marriage.

In one sense, these disorders are easier to treat because both will respond to medication. Treatments for megalomania in schizophrenia and bipolar directly address the underlying chemical dysfunctions responsible for the disorders. Mood stabilizers can help return bipolar sufferers to a normal mood, and schizophrenics may be treated with antipsychotics. Both conditions additionally benefit from ongoing therapeutic support and psychoeducation.

From the article:

Santorum’s campaign has been sinking fast since winning the Iowa caucuses at the beginning of the month. Santorum and Gingrich have effectively split the most conservative wings of the Republican Party, but if Santorum leaves the race, Gingrich will pull further ahead of Mitt Romney.

Or, do the right thing and call Newt, reach an agreement re: endorsement and active support, and then drop out.

Santorum needs experience and might get a meaty appointment in a Gingrich administration. His recalcitrance in doing so is beginning to look like a lack of good judgment and an overdose of unwarranted hubris.

Santorum is the Mr Rogers of the GOP (without the pleasant personality or charisma). He has all the appeal of a out-dated sweater vest.

I can only hope and pray that Rick has to good sense to leave the race ASAP, before irreparable damage is done.

Please, Rick, please put the movement first!

I hope conservatives in FL who prefer Newt over Willard take note!

He’s not on the ballot for the “next state” he’s moving on to.

Yeah he said pretty early on that he was going to concentrate elsewhere. Lots of races coming up that will be stronger states for him.

Nice post...but as someone who has a mild bi-polar condition (hypo-mania/cyclothymia), let me add my two bits.

Santorum suffers from none of the above. He is simply ambitious.

If he suffered from one of the diseases of which megalomania is a symptom, he would be infinitely more interesting and exciting.

Unfortunately, listening to Santorum speak is slightly less exciting than cleaning my cats' litterbox.

Exactly. He's moving on to Virginia to do some fundraisers, although he's not on the ballot there. Plus, he says, he needs to do his taxes...which apparently his wife is not able to do, and he's not able to do remotely.

Santorum’s not dropping out, but it looks like he won’t campaign anymore in Florida post-tomorrow’s debate:

Santorum indicates he could leave Florida before Tuesday primary
http://thehill.com/blogs/ballot-box/gop-presidential-primary/206587-santorum-indicates-he-may-leave-florida-before-primary

Santorum could never afford commercials in Florida, and with no free media from doing campaign events, he will be invisible Friday-Saturday-Sunday-Monday before the primary Tuesday. And this, of course, will only make more obvious to his remaining supporters his non-viability, who should then move disproportionately to Newt (the 2nd choice of most Santorum supporters.)

And it look as if Newt might need it, as the Florida polling tightens up.

“Santorum is the Mr Rogers of the GOP (without the pleasant personality or charisma).”

Thank you for the caveat, but since Perry dropped out, I’ve been supporting Newt.

You can consider this an official FR endorsement announcement... ;>)

LOL! I actually felt a little sorry for him because he was so clearly not ready for prime time. The sweater vest told you all you needed to know. I don’t know what impelled him to run.

I didn’t like his spiteful tone at all. He was good on pro-life stuff, but Perry and Gingrich were equally good, so I never even saw his advantage there. So maybe it was megalomania after all.

I doubt that he’ll endorse Gingrich (remember, some of the earliest personal attacks on Gingrich were from the Santorum campaign) but maybe by now it doesn’t really matter who he endorses.

There are lots of other states where Gingrich will need Santorum in the race. My vote will go to Santorum here in Michigan which is one less for Romney.

I think the Santorum supporters probably will move to Newt, regardless of who Santorum endorses (and he may not endorse anybody). He seemed to favor Romney, but on the other hand, maybe he’d prefer to fade off into the sunset and have his wife look for his income tax returns on his home computer.

That was a joke about his taxes, right? The extensions go until 10/15. I am sure he can do them sometime in the next 9 months.

As I recall, this is exactly what Santorum stated in TV interviews after SC.
