I'm really struggling to work out what all the fuss is about over this one. It seems to me to be much ado about nothing. Breaking news: Mitt Romney is very rich. He also gave millions and millions of dollars to charity and to the taxman.
In the early hours of this morning, some 550 pages of Mitt Romney's tax returns and a 2011 tax summary were released by his campaign. Just after dawn, there was a long campaign conference call for bleary-eyed reporters in which an accountant (who sounded exactly like you'd imagine Mitt Romney's accountant would sound) went into details of Mitt millions in mind-numbing detail.
There was an air of grumpy efficency about the call, which was led by Ben Ginsberg, who was George W. Bush's lawyer during the Florida election recount in 2000. At one point Ginsberg noted that 26 people from Chicago were listening into the proceedings, a reference to the Obama campaign headquarters.
So what were the headlines? He raked in about $42 million in 2010 and 2011. His effective tax rate was just below 14 percent, lower than that for many American taxpayers. He paid $6.2 million to the taxman and donated a staggering $7 million to charity, including $4.1 million to the Mormon church.
OK, so Mormons are supposed to tithe 10 percent of their income. But it's to Romney's immense credit that he promised to do this in his youth and followed through with that - to the tune of scores of millions (maybe hundreds of millions) of dollars throughout his life.

Yes, in the liberal world, charity is when you use the gov’t to force others to give but you take the credit.
Christians, who raile against anything not in The Bible accept the non-biblical Nicean Creed which came into being about 300 AD. AND IS NOT IN THE BIBLE?? GO FIGURE!!
You may think you’re making fun of them, but that indeed is their mindset.
Further, they despise private charity because they believe that anything a private charity does “lets the government off the hook” for doing it.
Not defending mormonism, but I’ve seen the left, whenever you bring up the relative charity contributions of conservatives vs liberals,
they will say “yeah, but if you exclude what they give to their church...”,
as if giving to your church somehow isn’t charity.
Liberals empower people who shouldn’t be trusted with power to violently confiscate the wealth of their neighbors to give to people who take advantage of the system, so that they liberals can feel good about themselves as “good people”.
“I believe it had his net worth at about $750,000.”
Joe Biden only has a net worth of $750,000???
I’m just a peon and mine is close to that. Where in the he!! is his money going?
Romney gave millions to Mormon Inc
Thats not charity..
Haven’t personally read what were the charities Romney contributed to - - -
For years the word was that Mormon’s giving didn’t exactly go outside their own charities.
Not talking about their tithe to their church, but rather the charities they sponsor.
Anyone know about that?
A Mormon family on our street regularly leaves something on our porch for one holiday or another - usually twice a year or so - baked goods, carolling, a Mayday flower - love that the kids are being taught some old-fashioned stuff!
And we do something ‘old-fashioned’ back: send a thank you note to them - - -
Because he's already paid taxes on it once (as ordinary income when it was earned) and probably at the highest tax rate. Then when that money is put to work (stocks for instance) it's taxed a second time at 15% if held for a year or longer. If less than a year, it's taxed at ordinary income tax rates.
Obama is proposing that the capital gains taxes be raised to 40-50%. The investor takes all the risks and if fortunate enough to make any money would have to give the government half of it.
Savers in this country are punished coming and going.
That was my exact thought, too.
Clown cars and makeup.
I don't know about muleskinner, but you're darn right I'll vote for Romney if he's the nominee. Just like I'll vote for Newt, Rick, or even Ron Paul if they're the nominee. Anybody But Obama and I do mean anybody.
Was this info in the New York Times too?
Mormon's have to reject verses in the very first chapter of the Bible to come up with their imaginary multiple Gods scenario.
Gen 1:16 God made two great lights--the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars.
but Mormon's reject that God made everything including the stars in favor of a fiction that God is only the God of this planet.
Numerous verses say there is "no other God" and "none like God", but Mormon's ignore that.
They even ignore the clear statement by Jesus that there is no marriage in Heaven, but in order to accomodate Joseph Smith's lustful lifestyle, Mormon's have rejected the clear Biblical language.
Those who might all under the broad brush you paint with probably don't know the Nicene Creed since its of more prominence for Catholics than evangelicals.
The Nicene Creed simply restates a few things from the Bible to provide a succinct description of the Christian faith of God the Father, Christ and His sacrifice and the Holy Trinity.
I don't care for the sniping and trashing of Mormons, Catholics or other faiths on FR.
I have met Jon Huntsman his father and his mother. Saw their rare collection of indian papoose blankets and rugs. They are real people but of course LDS. They do not push their religion at you at all, but they live theirs.
Jon the elder worked in the Commerce department in the Nixon WH and saw Nixons return. When he saw how little Nixon gave to charity he quit.
Because Jon made so much money to keep the 10% rule he had to go outside the LDS and became the largest single contributor to Catholic charities. He has a standing Papal invite to visit because of this. When he got prostate cancer he started a very large foudation for cancer research.
After the breakup of the USSR the Huntsmans keep Azerbaijan afloat with food and medicine through Iran,
You may not like their theology but it is hard to challenge their generosity. Mitt fits this mold.
I cannot match it and few candidates right or left can either.
Biden sounds like the second coming of Al Gore who got shamed when his taxes showed I think it was $500
Additional proof that leftists are good at spending other people's money but greedy with their own, and yours.
