I'm really struggling to work out what all the fuss is about over this one. It seems to me to be much ado about nothing. Breaking news: Mitt Romney is very rich. He also gave millions and millions of dollars to charity and to the taxman.
In the early hours of this morning, some 550 pages of Mitt Romney's tax returns and a 2011 tax summary were released by his campaign. Just after dawn, there was a long campaign conference call for bleary-eyed reporters in which an accountant (who sounded exactly like you'd imagine Mitt Romney's accountant would sound) went into details of Mitt millions in mind-numbing detail.
There was an air of grumpy efficency about the call, which was led by Ben Ginsberg, who was George W. Bush's lawyer during the Florida election recount in 2000. At one point Ginsberg noted that 26 people from Chicago were listening into the proceedings, a reference to the Obama campaign headquarters.
So what were the headlines? He raked in about $42 million in 2010 and 2011. His effective tax rate was just below 14 percent, lower than that for many American taxpayers. He paid $6.2 million to the taxman and donated a staggering $7 million to charity, including $4.1 million to the Mormon church.
OK, so Mormons are supposed to tithe 10 percent of their income. But it's to Romney's immense credit that he promised to do this in his youth and followed through with that - to the tune of scores of millions (maybe hundreds of millions) of dollars throughout his life.

What? No second hand underwear?
Charity - that’s the government’s business. /liberal thinking
So?
What’s he done for conservatism?
Absolutely Nothing!
Personally DGARA what Mittster did with his own money. It is what he wants to do with MINE that worries me.
It would be interesting to see the study of Republicans money to charity and Democrats money to charity
I’m pretty sure Biden is a miser. He has a reputation in Greenville for running up a tab at a certain grocery store, letting it linger for way to damn long and then coming up with contrived excuses to pay less than owed.
I believe it had his net worth at about $750,000. Biden has had at least a U.S. Senator's salary and gold-plated benefit package since John McCain was a guest in the Hanoi Hilton in the early 1970's. Biden has not even had to maintain a second home in the DC Area since (as the media if fond of telling us) he commuted to work from Wilmington on Amtrak.
I want Newt to beat Mitt. I don’t want Newt to attack Mitt on his capitalist flank.
There fixed it.
Just a few minutes ago, the radio announcer on the country music station I listen to came on the air and said that Obama gave less than 1% of his earnings to charity.
He then followed that up with the comment that he could understand how that happened. He said that Obama was so busy giving our money away that he just forgot to give some of his own.
This was on the largest country music station in south Mississippi.
Well, I agree that it would be foolish for Newt to attack Mitt for being a rich capitalist. But I still wonder why his taxes are so low. Does he keep most of it offshore? I notice that no one has said anything about that conjecture.
Oh, geez, stop being such a hardass and give the guy some credit. The Mormon church is the main financier of California’s anti-gay marriage proposition. If his donations helped that effort in ANY way, he’s done plenty.
I’d say he paid “only” 14% because he gave 7 million to charities which equal legal deductions.
Screw the left and their “pay what’s fair”.
Then, make the poor pay their fair share, too.
Plugs wants to spread your wealth (and Willard’s) around to the poor not his.
I think we should refrain from calling the LDS church a false religion. It might not be your religion, but I seem to remember that we have religious tolerance in this country.
And last time I checked there weren’t a bunch of LDS people blowing themselves up or flying planes into buildings.
Obsess much?
BTW, update your Home Page....nobody's cared about what McCain thinks in, oh, 3 or 4 years.
