This dentists’ patients were lucky.

A coworker of my wife, whose spouse went in to a ‘bargin rate’ dentist, had the shock of her life.

She was sedated for some dental procedure, when she came to ALL her teeth were missing, along with the dentist.

Never found the teeth, never found the dentist.

She still is without teeth.

"[I still don’t get why they call grinding away most of a tooth a ‘build-up’ preparing for a crown to be applied.]"

Unfortunately, a lot of dentists out there grind away TOO much tooth, so must therefore do a post and core build up before the crown, instead of just a post and crown.

I used to work for one butthole who would grind the persons tooth down so much, he would have to send the patient to his "bff periodontist" for a crown lengthening.

I work for an endodontist (root canal specialist). Our doctors try to leave as much tooth as they possibly can.

Now, there are a lot of patients who wait TOO long to finally get the rct done and by then, the rot has taken over most of the tooth. Unfortunately, that means the doctor must drill most of the tooth away.

"Ok, so how does one check out a Dr or dentist ahead of time?"

You can't. The best way to get a great dentist is by a trusted friend or relative who has a great one.

One piece of advice......NEVER GO TO AN INSURANCE OFFICE. What's an insurance office? One who takes EVERY dental insurance under the sun.

The DMO's are the pits.

A specialist will cost a lot more....and it also depends on where you live.

Medicaid does, Medicare does not. Medicare offers a subsidy dental insurance, usually through AARP and it's Delta Dental.

We don't touch medicaid, workers comp or any such thing w/ a 10 foot pole.

NP! I would suggest anyone on medicaid just get the tooth pulled, at their own expense, by an Oral Surgeon.

If you’re military or retired military, you can also get Delta Dental (a good PPO insurance) as well.

When I was 17, I had a root canal done by an individual who was rated as on of the top oral surgeons in Pennsylvania. While I don’t think any root canal could ever be described as a pleasant experience, about a year later when I got my first panorex X-ray for the military, the work he did was readily evident, and I remember marveling at how fine his craftsmanship looked

1.Oral surgeons do not perform root canals, only Endodontists and General Dentists.
2.A panorex is not considered of diagnostic quality for evaluation of root canals, only a periapical radiograph.

Pretty dang good advice, your posts on this thread.

My wife is a very experienced Hygienist and we know many Dentists and related specialties. I’m told that the current crop of Dentists in Dental school are the cream of the crop, as many would would have gone to Medical School are opting away from MDs because of the lawsuit and regulatory risks and costs.

"1.Oral surgeons do not perform root canals, only Endodontists and General Dentists."

Regardless of his title, he's the guy that performed my root canal.

"2.A panorex is not considered of diagnostic quality for evaluation of root canals, only a periapical radiograph."

I didn't get the panorex to evaluate my root canal. I got it so my remains could be identified in the event of a fiery airplane or helicopter crash.

But my root canal still looks pretty cool on it!

In this economy, more and more general dentists are doing their own rcts.....and screwing them up.

If you ever need an rct on any of your middle to back uppers....GO TO A SPECIALIST.

Perforations on lower teeth can be fixed. A collapsed sinus is much more complicated.

Thnx =). I believe the big difference now in dental school, they are also being taught the BUSINESS end, as well as dentistry.

We still have patients coming in expecting to pay $10 a month on a $1525 root canal. Please, we may as well do it for free!

The technology that has come along is SO amazing......but the price for it is amazingly high, as well as the liability insurance.

Not to mention the great staff (ahem). If you pay piss poor, that is what you will get, piss poor.

MY boss is old school. Does great rcts, patients LOVE him, but is still suckered by the general dentists that take advantage. They screw up someones root canal, call him and he fixes the patient up, usually for free.

Our associate, of the “new” generation, has a completely different outlook. He combines both perfected rcts (sometimes we stare at his final x-rays in amazement) along with the business end.

In regards to the lawsuit and regulatory risks and costs, they are now going after dentists as well.

I believe the premise, in my own humble opinion, is that if you touch someone, you can lose your life.

This is why I am NOT renewing my CPR certification. I am front end at the endo office; therefore I do NOT need to be certified.

I refuse to touch anyone until tort reform is enacted.

*Shudder* Your posts are interesting. How does one prevent or help receding gums? I brush, floss, use anti-cavity mouthwash and the hygenist still says to me....”I see some more receding here....” It makes me depressed!
