Romney gave $4 Million donations to Mormon Church. Do Mormons help the poor with these donations?
January 24, 2012 | Ralph Mitchell

On his income taxes released today, we see that Romney gave $4 Million tithe donations to Mormon Church. Do Mormons help poor Americans with these donations? Do the Mormons have something similar to Catholic Charities, which helps thousands of Americans (both Catholic and non-Catholics) with basic life needs, medical help, childcare help, education help, etc. The main question is do Mormons use the $4 Million from Romney to ONLY advance the Mormon religion without helping the American poor. Does Romney even know or care what the Mormon Church does with his $4 Million donation? I think that is a fair question.

So Newt has problems and Romney has problems. You forgive them both but are going for the candidate who is, by far, the most liberal?

Newt has admitted his wrongs, and he says finding Christianity changed and redeemed him. But Romney keeps lying and flipping. He’s done quite a bit of that during this campaign season, and as I said, lied about his own name at one point. Where is the logic in supporting him over Newt? If, as it seems, you have some kind of regional chip on your shoulder, then you really haven’t forgiven him.

hey - I guess I had not had enough coffee to make a clear comment - I am with you and like you think all sorts of religon bashing is terrible, as often displayed by some. I too am a contributor, long time member and a part of the break away in America, Anglican (espicopal) faith. If a guy donates 10% of his income to charity, I say this is an example of joy not demeaning commnetary.

Maybe as a Catholic you should wander onto the Mormon threads once in awhile and find out what they really believe about Catholicism. It ain’t pretty.

There are many different ways to “ask” someone to do something.

And Mormons are by far the best at spiritual blackmail.

...we understand that trying to tear a mormon candidate down because he is a mormon is despicable and un-American.

Last time I looked in the Dictionary, the words "despicable" and "un-American" were quite negative terms to hurl at somebody.

So...allow me to use your own personal standard -- what I'll call "Morphing Libertarian 3:16"...and encourage you to stop being a two-faced hypocrite and live by your own preaching:

...we understand...
(Apparently Morphing Libertarian understands)
... that trying to tear a (FREEPER poster) down because
...of his religious expression...
is despicable and un-American.

Oh, I'm well aware of it, but trust me, it's not just them.

I personally do not believe "News/Activism" is the place for these threads. Isn't that why the Religion forum exists? After all, this poster's question is hardly "news."

But hey, that's just me. Maybe next time it will be posted under "Breaking."

The tithes (should be) are used within the church, to assist financially-struggling members, to help support the canning and preservation centers they have to process and preserve harvests. Members (and others) can bring their harvest to the center for processing. I don’t believe they use much of it for helping poor people in general, however. Their charity pretty much stays at home.

Since it involves a presidential candidate and his recent release of tax records, news/activism should be fine.

FWIW, last year JR moved an LDS thread posted by an LDS freeper to ‘breaking’ news. The article was “Joseph Smith: Apostle of Jesus Christ”.

Sometimes these articles do get moved to religion but not always.

I did not say that aid wasn’t sent.
Of course they have sent aid, and they advertise about on their news sites, they send out PR bulletins, they self promote.
I will say for the amount of money that SLC lds has, they do not proportionately give nearly as much as other groups.
From lds.org: The Mormon Church has donated more than $1 billion in cash and material assistance to 167 different countries in need of humanitarian aid since it started keeping track in 1985.
That is 27 years one billion dollars OR $37 million a year.
There is aid IT IS NOT as much as they promote themselves to have given.

It didn't used to be that way...we used to get smacked pretty hard in the past for such transgressions.

However, since this thread is still standing in News/Activism I can only assume that your statement "Sometimes these articles do get moved to religion but not always" must be correct.

In any event, I pinged the teachers for clarification, should they wish to give it.

A few of us here still wish to avoid constant Mormon bashing so we know to stay off the Religion forum. However, there is no avoiding it when it spills over into News/Activism, where it does not belong. I say this as a Catholic...but then some consider my religion a cult too.

Christians could use the help of Catholics but it seems that most of the Catholics that take a stand on Mormonism here, defend it, and they always want to do it while making sure the audience knows they are Catholic

I assume you know that your church takes the position and the Pope has declared that Mormons are not Christians, that Mormonism is not Christian, yet you want the public to remain ignorant of the truth of Mormonism as it portrays itself as a Christian church to them?
