Romney's Ugly Politics Now Surfacing In Surrogates
Riehl World View ^ | January 22, 2012 | Dan Riehl

One of the things fellow Republicans and political observers have never liked about Mitt Romney is the wholesome piety he exhibits on the stump, while his hacks and PACs engage in some of the ugliest politics around. He can flash that plastic smile and pretend all he wants, but people know the cold fish doesn't shy away from the politics of personal destruction. If anything, his campaigns embrace it more than most, while feigning ignorance and pretending otherwise himself.

This is why so many people in the GOP have come to dislike Mitt Romney.

Mitt Romney backer and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie's comments this morning that Newt Gingrich "embarrassed" the Republican Party has the formerr House Speaker's Florida campaign co-chairman, Alan Levine, fuming.

"Far be it from me to tell the governor of New Jersey to focus on his own state, but this isn't a way to begin a campaign in Florida. It's disappointing," said Levine, a former healthcare chief under Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal who is new a private-sector hospital executive.

But now he's panicking because his South Carolina campaign has become a laughing stock. I've talked with some long-time operatives on the ground, in some cases, they've alienated more people than they've pulled in. There's also talk that his people in Florida are starting to panick, now, too.

Mitt Romney can use a legal facade to feign ignorance with his PAC problems. But he can't do that with his surrogates who come with faces and names. He could call, or call-out a Coulter, or Christie and ask them to stand down. But he won't. And even if he did, he wouldn't mean it.

His weak political skills are catching up to him. Unable to truly connect with voters, it now appears he's going to try and rely on some slash and burn surrogates to tear the other guy down.

It won't work. Ultimately, all this vitriol is going to circle back and make him all the more unlikeable to the base, something he already is to a good degree. If he keeps it up, this puppy, Mittens, is going down. The use of surrogates, not PACs for his ugly brand of politics, brings it just a bit too close to home for him to continue to hide it. Voters always reject real ugliness in politics. They'll reject both it and Mitt Romney this time around, too.

Gave me my first chuckle of the week. Brought memories of a small child back to me. My family moved to Floriday when I was 3. My mom kept a bag packed for 5 years and threatened my dad every week she was going “home”.LOL! Florida is not for the weak at heart when they first get here. It is a learning curve!
I do love it though, you just have to find a town that makes you comfortable.

If Newt wins the nomination, he would be wise to prohibit the hiring of any former Romney staffers. They would be a cancer within the campaign who will do what they did to Sarah Palin in 2008.

I hope I see Ann Coulter holding a garage sale with The Dixie Chicks before too long. She’ll be trying to unload her books and the Chicks will be trying to unload CDs.

Florida is not for the weak at heart when they first get here. It is a learning curve! I do love it though, you just have to find a town that makes you comfortable.

Winter Haven, new home of Legoland-Florida is a wonderful place to live.

Because of my spinal cord injury, I used to say to myself that the injury took 10 years off my life.

We moved to Florida from Connecticut and had been here about 6 months when my wife out of the clear blue said, "You know, I think moving here has added 10 years to your life."

She had never heard me say about losing 10 years before, so it came as a shock to hear her say that.

Winter Haven is in the middle of the state. Equi-distant to the Atlantic and the Gulf and the Georgia/Florida border and the Keys.

For Mrs. Theknow's birthday one year, I took her to Vero Beach to watch the sunrise over the Atlantic, walk the beach, have breakfast, return home, take a nap, have lunch and then grab a bottle of wine and go watch the sunset on the beach at St. Petersburg.

Now we are exploring Florida's many biking trails and having great experiences together. BTW - Shark River Valley bike trail in the Everglades is awesome!

Hot? Humid? Sure. But the temperature never gets above 100 like it did in New England and Minnesota when we lived there.

You just learn to not do much between 2 and 5PM. Of course, 3PM there is the daily thunderstorm to cool things off during the summer. But almost no rain from October to May. And every evening, a sea breeze kicks in from either the Atlantic or the Gulf and cools our house.

We do miss seeing the shuttle launches from our backyard. But they still launch other rockets, just not as large.

And last year, we had 361 days where the sun shined on us at sometime during the day.

Many of them have just been Zotted in the last few months,

Most of them just practiced "I dare you" one too many times on JR. Some FR mormons thought they could co-opt the FR site the way they believe they can co-opt the name "Christian".

There is a lot of punditry about how never before different candidates won the first three primaries.

If Willard didn't go full-bore with a vicious and dishonest campaign against Newt in Iowa, New would have easily there.

If I thought that Willard was a half-way decent guy and not such a gutless sneak, I might even be able to cut him some slack for his political acts.

could it have had something to do with the fact that the LDS scout troops must all be "worthy" of mormon priesthood and this inclusion would bring in all the non-mormon scouts?

This wouldn't be the case. LDS Scout units (that is, units that offer the LDS Scouting program under the "Green Book," as part of the Aaronic Priesthood program of the LDS Church - as opposed to offering the traditional BSA Scouting program - technically cannot deny membership to non-LDS youth)

There are many practical reasons why the majority of LDS units are composed of LDS youth - the Aaronic Priesthood components of LDS Scouting, formation of patrols by quorum, selection of youth leaders by the bishopric, Scouting activities as part of Young Men's - but there are certainly non-LDS youth in LDS units.

Generally, this happens in areas that are heavily LDS, where it's difficult to find a local unit that isn't LDS. The reverse - LDS youth in non-LDS units - happens as well. I frequently mention that my best friend has also been one of my Assistant Scoutmasters for twenty+ years (he has no Temple Recommend and has never been called as a leader in a LDS unit). His sons went through our unit. A few other LDS youth have been through out unit (and are there now). The issue for LDS youth in non-LDS units is camping on Saturday night. For some of our LDS youth and their dads (we haven't had a LDS mom serve as a leader or go on a campout), they leave a campout on a Saturday evening and drive home, or don't go on campouts where that's not practical.

They have been taught from birth that they are special and will, if they obey all the rules, become a god of their own planet.

I don't believe this is technically true.

I've done some research after MormonVoices said there were zero (zero!) instances of this being taught at LDS.org. I've talked with some LDS friends.

I believe the doctrine of Eternal Increase teaches that an exalted man who becomes a god gets his own universe. Man becomes as God. God has a universe. Exalted man gets his universe. I've been told (exact quote): "We'll be gods of our own universe, not our own planet. You're thinking too small."

I'm not mocking the theology. The USA accepts religions that teach reincarnation. It's only the denial that bothers me.

Ann Coulter has lost my support with her undying love for RINO Chris Christie and Mitt and for her smart A$$ed comments about the other Republican candidates. I am beginning to believe she is a RINO too.

So happy to hear that you and the Mrs. theknow are happy living in Winter Haven. It is a nice town. I live in Lakeland so we are neighbors so to speak! I loved the story of Mrs. theknow’s birthday celebration. It is so true that this state has so much to offer in things to do and weather. I travel the central Fl. area as a salesrep and can be in Lakeland in the Morning and Sarasota in afternoon. Tampa Bay is my base so I know the roads well. You take care and enjoy your sense of adventure here.
