I recently saw a news article in which someone was appealing to disaffected liberals by pointing out that if Obama is reelected, he'll likely appoint at least one and probably two or perhaps three Supreme Court justices if he's reelcted. We need to keep that in mind. Roe vs. Wade could be overturned in our lifetimes if Obama is defeated. Two of the Republican appointees (Antonin Scalia and Anthony Kennedy) and one Democrat appointee (Stephen Breyer) are in their 70's and presumably would like to retire soon. Do you want Obama to name their replacements?
I suspect that it would work the other way around - the coming of another great religious revival would in turn lead to widespread, perhaps overwhelming popular support against abortion.
So long as the Supreme Court is, ah, creative, they wouldn’t need to actually overturn Roe vs Wade. In Brown vs Board of Education, the SC didn’t overturn Plessy vs Ferguson for political reasons, but rather sidestepped the issue and cited rather sketchy modern educational research as proving that segregated schools could not be equal, and that this violated the 14th Amendment. Their predecessors simply couldn’t have known this, and it was to no fault of them that they had come to their original conclusion.
Similarly, a future Supreme Court could cite modern medical research as disproving the Roe Vs Wade principles of multiple stages of fetus development affecting how states could regulate or criminalize abortion, without breaking stare decisis.
That is why it is vital to get Newt in there and not Romney.
His appointments sucked...surprise...
