Rick Santorum walked a fine line in his response to questions about Marianne Gingrich’s accusations against her ex-husband and Santorum’s GOP rival, Newt.

“Personal matters are personal matters, but they are matters that are — particularly when you are in public life as he was at the time and the people involved were also in a sense in public life — those issues are issues that people will look at,” Santorum responded.

“I believe in forgiveness, I’m called to believe in forgiveness,” he continued. “I do believe having some accountability to a higher calling other than self is a very, very important aspect and perspective that is important for leaders.

“To make the final comment, these are issues of character and these are issues that people will consider based upon the time, when, where, how all those thing will factor in and I’ll let people make that decision, I’m certainly not going to make it for them,” he said to a crowd of about 150 people.

In the old days FR was a place where most folks would say if his wife can’t trust him how can the country

Given us any evidence that Newt has cheated on Calista or concede the possibility that he has changed and happily married.

What message are we sending to the nation, to the world, and our future generation when we sacrifice the sanctity of marriage for the sake and the expedience to win ?

That we believe someone can change, be redeemed and shouldn't have behavior that occurred more than a decade held against him?

The Bible is filled with flawed men that were redeemed and ended up writing a good portion of the Bible.

The sad thing here is that Romney has no shot at winning the nomination despite the fact that he is actually running to the right of Newt Gingrich.

Maybe that is because his record is to the left of Obama?

Do you really think conservatives trust a word that comes out of Romney's mouth?

yes Karen Santorum has a past, as we all do...
the doctor is 40 years older than she was and today he is 92 and running his mouth, how discussing is that...

shame on the old jerk...he needs to be told to keep his past private at his age, I'm sure he isn't doing much “screwing” around these days!!!, he even had the nerve to share pictures of them...it was a serious problem in Karen's parents lives and he has to broadcast...

by the way the author of the article Nancy Hass needs to hear from us all..why hasn't she checked into Michelle Robinson Obama past...I'm sure she was around the block a few times also...just more Liberal dirt digging...sad.. (its a Newsweek article, I canceled my subscription 20 years ago!!!)

While you’re at it, ask her when we can expect her in-depth article on Larry Sinclair.

No clue. If we had any freaking journalists left in this country, we might know what ever happened to him.

It’s a forgiveness issue. Do not cast stones.

Isn’t it the height of irony that the forgiveness is flowing, and benefit of the doubt cards are being strewn in Newt’s path, and yet not one person has it in his/her heart to forgive Santorum for his sweater vests?

No, the “weakling” fought back against Newt, and you didn’t like it.

Actually the irony is that the pit vipers forced US into their game of 'Rules for Radicals' while the price of gas explodes and their dear leader rejects our neighbor to the NORTH the opportunity to buy NORTH American 'oil'.

I have family and friends that are really hurting, and higher gas prices is only making their lives more miserable. Newt's old 'sins' or Santorum's choice of attire notwithstanding.

I hate it when people say that. Especially nOObs.
***JWalsh is right, Cyber Liberty Newbie.

Anybody who laid such judgement to a politician’s wife was ridiculed, “back in the day.”
***We laid tons of judgement to Clintoon’s wife ‘back in the day’. These ARE issues of character.

The sweater vest is awesome. I have worn them for decades. It must be a PA thing.

Appropriate attire for a man who supports the right to bare arms.

“lacking certain abilities”

Are you admitting you're not bright enough to grasp his meaning? Here, let me translate: although Santorum is aware he's not a rock star, he's confident he'll be a good President.

How's that? Better?

“That is admirable.”

Oh goodie, you broke down and threw him a bone.

Santorum bested Newt {and I'm not the only one who knows so} when the latter said Rick couldn't handle the scope of the Presidency. Rick got him good. And THAT'S ability.

Thanks for your thoughtful post. I'm in a cap and trade state, so I share the pain re energy.

When I think about “our lives, our fortunes, and our Sacred Honor,” and then see what's happening here, it sickens me to realize how absolutely mean and cowardly we've become. And how far even conservatives have wandered from our founding principles. It's not easy to watch people settle for one candidate as they gut a man who clearly has the qualities we've been waiting for in a conservative candidate.

They'll forgive one man who destroyed the heart of a wife to the extent that after all this time, her grief is still evident - they'll invoke Biblical quotations and God's mercy and they'll talk redemption, and yet they can't forgive another man for backing Arlen Specter, nor will they accept his repentance for this and certain votes he cast. All his years of fighting for the culture of life has earned him only contempt, accusations of weakness, and dehumanizing insults ranging from the mundane to the vicious.

If I've learned only one thing here it's that mercy is a very selective thing.

:-) I think they look very nice - casual, yet neat and put together. Good for PA.

Actually, I did not agree with that line of Newt’s attack on RS - at least to that degree.
And did RS get him good? Don’t know about that. Since that debate, it seems that Newt’s surge has continued and it seems RS has continued to sink in SC. We’ll know tonight.

Several pundits are of the opinion RS had a good debate. Others think he had an awful debate, becoming more “unlikeable.” I am in the latter camp. I would say that about 16% is the line of demarkation tonight. Above that, RS had a good debate. Below that, he had a bad debate.

Please “Mr. Character”.. you mean like the guy who told everyone he lived in PA, bought and kept a vacant house just to back up that claim???/

Santorum is not remotely as clean as he wants to claim on character.

You mean like advocating tough immigration policy on english version of your campaign website, but advocating amnesty for illegal aliens on the SPANISH version of the same web site?

You mean to claim to be pro conservative principals, while voting against right to work and capitulating to the PA Unions?

Etc etc etc..

Not defending Newt’s actions, but Santorum, while making a career out of telling social conservatives things they want to hear, has not walked the line nearly as straight as many believe he has, and that is one of the many reasons he was voted out of office.
