A new poll shows no break for Gov. Perry, even at home. A Public Policy Polling survey shows Perry in third in Texas for the GOP presidential nomination. He is behind Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich.
A previous PPP poll in September showed Perry winning Texas, beating Romney by close to 40 points. Now, Perry is in third with 18 percent. Romney is at 24 percent and Gingrich has 23 percent.
Rick Santorum beats Ron Paul in Paul's home state, 15 percent to 12 percent, putting Santorum in fourth. However, in a head-to-head poll Santorum is the only candidate who beats Romney in Texas. Romney beats Perry head-to-head but just barely, 46 to 45 percent if the April 3 primary had only their two names on it. In PPP's September poll, a head-to-head match up between Romney and Perry showed Perry winning 72-18.
The same poll shows Texans feel Perry is hurting the state's overall image, with 39 percent saying Perry's run for their party's nomination has created negative perceptions of the state. Only 13 percent say Perry's run has been positive.
It’s too bad.
I was hoping he could hang in there and the other Rick would go away...not to mention Rawpa.
Thanks no dems. I thought I’d read somewhere that Gov Perry endorsed Newt.
He did the right thing by endorsing Newt. He could’ve endorsed Romney, like SC’s governor.
Absolutely wrong.
The facts are these; Romney had a poll surge across the entire South. He was leading Gingrich everywhere and including the Southern Tier.
Some Southern Republicans had begun to buy the Romney is inevitable...only he can beat Obama...crud that was propagandizing everyone from the establishment GOP.
Perry’s own viability as a Presidential candidate was its own seperate issue, but it was happening with the backdrop of Romney’s giant tsunami surge everywhere and including the South, which is normally not Romney country. It should have been Newt country or in a perfect world, Perry country, but for it to become Romney country was truly scary.
Again, not a Texas phenonomenon. Not at all.
Anyone who ignores that truth is spinning trying to put a bad light on Rick Perry’s decision. And that includes you, no dems. You came on a positive Perry/Newt thread and did just that.
The Perry disapproval in Texas was made clear...it was because people in Texas were tired of his running for President with only getting trashed in return and not fairing well, results wise. They do approve of him as their Governor. But as the facts show, at the same time, Romney was surging across the South including Texas Surging against Newt. Surging, period.
Rick Perry was focused like a laser beam on South Carolina and then on to the general election campaign. He hoped to help Newt against Romney, and he hopes to carry his small Federal Government Cause forward after helping Newt to the extent he could.
With Santorum still in, if Romney had won SC, even by a squeaker, and with Newt’s ex wife trashing him on the eve of SC, that would bode very ill for Newt against Romney, going forward.
It didn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that to help Newt against Romney in SC was critical, and that’s what Rick Perry did.
The Texas Poll was not responsible for it. The situation between Romney, Newt and Santorum in SC, and then going directly into FL where Romney is trying to take it by storm and finish Newt for good, coupled with Perry getting low numbers in SC polls, made that decision a given. It would have been the same decision if there were no such Texas poll.
Too bad you have to go here, no dems.
I don’t know how many people you are fooling in your grudged congratulation of Perry while harping on this turkey of a point, but I am not among the fooled.
And those of us who fought and blocked the Trans Texas Corridor with our local state representatives told everyone this would be so.
Perry’s supporters tried like hell to say the issue never happened, or that it was a smear made up by leftists, or that it was Perry himself that pulled the plug, or that it was just a road. BS.
The Perry campaign has to have some historical significance as one of the biggest failures of all time. It is remarkable how incredibly inept he proved himself to be.
I think you’ve hit most of the points correctly but there may be, (and I live in Texas) one additional factor for Perry’s lack of traction in Texas? My “feel” for the Texas electorate is, “Never Again” a Texan in the White House due in part to a growing sentiment among many Texans that they’d rather see the state secede and due in part to a growing disaffection with anything having to do with the Federal gov’t. I’m seeing that sentiment expressed, oddly enough, among the upper and middle income groups and across racial lines. I detect a serious decline in support for these “Federal” elections and more people tell me they’ll stay home or only participate in the local races.
Newt said last night that Perry’s support was “very helpful”. For Perry’s numbers being so low, it sure seems in retrospect that he had broad support.
“He did the right thing by endorsing Newt. He couldve endorsed Romney, like SCs governor”
Or my governor, Bob McDonnell. I think I’ll move to Texas.
Perry isn’t the glorified person across the political specturm as you proclaim. True he has been gov. over 10 years and will have 14 years when this term is up.
Perry only won the GOP primary by a 51.14% margin in 2010. He won the 2006 governors race with a 39.02% plurality.
Perry has about spent his political capital in Texas and time for him to move on and let someone else provide leadership to this state.
You are correct but it may be too soon for his more sycophantic supporters to accept that truth.
Perry’s political career is over now. He will never win another election.
Governor Perry had a lot of supporters like me who really liked the guy, believed him to be the most qualified and conservative candidate but understood that his campaign had lost momentum and he wasn't going to get it back. Not this year. I don't believe in miracles. When it's primary season and your guy is polling at 5%-6%, it just isn't going to happen. Perry bowing out and endorsing Newt Gingrich made it a lot easier for me to do the same.
Now it is time for Rick Santorum to do the same thing.
To deport:
My post had nothing to do with your claim against me that I presented Rick Perry as a “glorified person across the political spectrum”.
My post was focused on a single thing and that’s what I addressed.
I don’t know what got into you...posting that to me. Your opinion of Rick Perry as a political personality is irrelevant to my post.
To nodems:
You came on a postive Perry/Newt thread and made a claim that was totally unsupported by facts.
You used two events: a Texas poll, and Rick Perry’s decision to stand down in SC before the vote and to endorse Newt Gingrich, and you stirred trouble by claiming that one event CAUSED the other event.
You also hypocritically claimed to congratulate Perry for making the correct decision. Only a fool would fall for the line as a sincere one, while at the same instant you were stirring trouble with a completely unsupportable claim about Perry dropping out for a different reason than he gave. And for a different reason than was staring everyone in the face.
Again, the latest polling, before Newt has made his own surge back against Romney, was showing a clear Romney surge in polls nationwide and across the South. Those of us who noticed that found it scary. There is no way we can save this country if Southern Republicans vote for Romney.
Therefore, the poll you cite of Romney leading, was not a Texas phenomenon. It was nationwide and including the South. He was even leading Newt.
Therefore it is seen in a much different light than merely a reflection on Rick Perry in Texas.
These are all FACTS.
To the extent people in Texas were unhappy with Rick Perry it was clear they wished he would stop running for President and return to being Governor, period. Can’t say I blame them, given what Perry experienced in his campaign. He has a 60% approval as Texas Governor.
(That’s not “glorified”, deport, that’s just a fact.)
Meanwhile, in SC, polls showed Perry would finish very low there. With Santorum still in the race, and Newt regaining some of his footing...enough to make it close with Romney and perhaps win, and with Romney pouring everything he can pour into FL...hoping to take both SC even if by a squeaker and to run away with FL, it was crystal clear that Perry needed to do something right then and there in SC, to help Newt, to hurt Romney, and to look forward to the Fall Campaign.
If there had been NO TEXAS POLL, Rick Perry would have made the exact same decision. There was no other reasonable decision for him to make.
Therefore your point FAILS.
I hope you effort to stir trouble FAILS, too.
My post had nothing to do with your claim against me that I presented Rick Perry as a glorified person across the political spectrum.
My bad, I thought you had him walking on water. But if you didn’t, I agree 100%.
Thanks for the kind words about our Governor and state.
Tired of “Romney-ization” among some Southern Republicans states?...come on down to Texas.
Our Governor won’t Romney-ize the state, and I believe before it’s over the people of Texas will go for Newt, not Mitt.
There, all fixed.
Cheers!
I certainly hope so.
You’re blessed to have such a great governor! I only wish we could have had him nationwide. Maybe another year....
People STILL trashing Perry are afraid of his intentions which Newt is going to give him reign with.
Perry knows he doesn’t have to be POTUS or VP to bring States’ Rights to the rest or demolish job-killing activist fed departments. He just needs his good friend Newt to hand him the keys!
The people who think Perry is politically finished and post vanity threads about it haven’t done any of theirr homework. Poor excuse for FReepers.
