Stephen Colbert, Herman Cain set rally in South Carolina to build excitement for 'non-candidacies'

He may be running a fake candidacy, but Stephen Colbert is having a very real rally in South Carolina — co-hosted by Herman Cain.

The Comedy Central personality announced on his show Wednesday that he would unite with the former Godfather’s Pizza CEO for the "Rock Me Like a Herman Cain!" rally to get voters — and fans — excited for the comedian and Cain's "non-candidacies".

"There will be speeches, there will be cheerleaders, there will be a marching band and a gospel band — this is going to be even better than my rally in D.C.," Colbert said on the show, referring to a rally he held in Washington last year.

...Colbert’s support of Cain adds another layer to the joke — which Cain's spokespeople insist he's in on, his spokeswoman told Fox News.

"On Stephen Colbert's endorsement of himself as Herman Cain, I find it very clever and humorous, as it should be," Cain said on Fox411. "Anyone who finds what Mr. Colbert is doing offensive should simply lighten up. To be perfectly clear, I will not be assuming Stephen Colbert's identity. We are very different when it comes to the color of our — hair."

The trivialization of our politics continues apace.

I despise Colbert. I can take Jon Stewart, he’s occasionally quite funny. And Stewart is an admitted lefty.

Colbert is a lefty, mocking conservatives. Mockery is a particularly vicious form of humor. I certainly hope karma comes into play for Colbert, he’s quite deserving.

I agree. So why is Herman Cain participating in this? Was he ever conservative, or ever serious about running for POTUS? Maybe Cain's candidacy was a form of ridicule and mockery also. It certainly played out that way.

"Colbert is an I-D-10-T."

...and Herman Cain is joining him. What a let down.

My feelings exactly: Why is Cain lending his presence to Colbert’s ongoing stunt-as-career?

Colbert reminds me a bit of a political version of Cindi (sp) Lauper, the 80s singer, in that “it’s all an act” — the entire persona is made up. She didn’t REALLY talk that way.

One difference was, Lauper actually had some singing and video-making talents. In contrast, does ANYone who’s not already a lefty enjoy Colbert’s shtick?

I’m really stumped as to what to think of this.
Whether Cain is “in on the joke” or not, I can’t see
much upside for Cain or ANY real candidate,(except maybe
Obama) for that matter.
I think you’re right about the trivialization.
This can only diminish Cain’s influence, whatever it is.

“I agree. So why is Herman Cain participating in this? ...”

My guess is that Cain is like most who venture into politics, an attention whore. Now that no one is interested in Herman Cain, he appears to be desperate to get into the limelight.

Newt sat on a couch with the queen of evil for a shot at the limelight.

Politician = attention whore.

Herman Cain is a player. But, he tossed us a little red meat to swallow, and we are suckers for a silver tongue with no record. E-V-E-R-Y T-I-M-E.

What’s really sad about this - Newt was one of the few people who stood up for Cain during his problems, and often, and he had a one-on-one debate with Cain, which really helped Cain, and during that sit-down Newt was very kind and solicitous to Cain and tried to make him look better than he was. And now, on a day when Newt could his help, Cain is playing games with a ridiculous comedian. What a loser, I mean, what a quitter.

What in the world is the matter with Herman Cain??? After all the people who were very devoted to him (I never was), contributed money to his “campaign,” and defended him to the bitter end, why in the world is he now seeming to mock the whole thing?

Tacky, tacky.

I agree.

Has made me question my confidence in my own judgements......a minor one, but he has shown himself to be a bit of an idiot, and his non endorsement today was just cringe worthy.

He should have endorsed Newt today

His endorsement holds little value either way, but he could have salvaged something.

He has just adopted the liberal persona thrust upon him as a joke candidate....now joke personality. What a shame.

I see Cain is living up to my expectations. I always thought there was something wrong with him. Then, there were the stories about excessive drinking and flirting, if not more. That is excluding the harassment claims and his girlfriend. The girl is a trainwreck, and I imagine all of the so-called conservatives in the public eye knew it all (as he was said to be kind of a heavy drinker and a flirt at cosnervative events). Hannity, Limbaugh etc. His judgement is seriously off.
