Gingrich Daughter's Teen Work May Have Violated Law
By Eve Tahmincioglu During the Republican presidential debate this week, Newt Gingrich shared a story about how his daughter worked as a church janitor when she was only 13.
I was actually proud of my clean bathrooms, Jackie Gingrich Cushman said in an telephone interview Tuesday, referring to the janitorial job she held at the First Baptist Church in Carrollton, Ga., in the early 1980s. I learned work has value.
But that work may have been a violation of federal child labor laws that her father has denounced as stupid.
Cushman was 13 when she took the part-time, minimum-wage janitorial job, scrubbing bathrooms two days a week using cleaning supplies and a bucket. She said working as a janitor was a "great experience." Asked if she was working legally as a janitor for the church, Cushman said, "I certainly hope so."
But based on child labor laws in effect now and in the 1980s, 13-year-olds are not allowed to hold janitorial jobs, said Michael Hancock, assistant administrator for policy in the wage and hour division of the U.S. Department of Labor.

Oh, this is just stupid.
Based on the is story it would be against the law to have kids to chores.
Good for Newt and his daughter. I proudly gave the middle finger to the g-nannies when I was 13 and started working for pay.
They can put that law where the sun don’t shine.
Every kid I grew up with worked.
I had a paper route when I was 9 or 10.
Newt’s moving up in the polls.
My parents would have been in prison. Abe Lincoln’s also....government has to get out of parenting business. They have done enough destruction of the family—marriage and children/education through their unconstitutional laws. They have no right to interfere and chores make mature adults.
Look at Ben Franklin’s life and everyone’s prior to government destruction of perseverance and responsibility in kids by the 70’s. Destroy the family-—Marx’s mantra. Get power over the kids and forming their worldview and make them lazy and disrespectful of the family unit. Divide-—make parents evil......mean....Prevent children from learning valuable life lessons. Everyone who amounted to anything would have their parents in prison under the fascists today.
The MSM will really be hitting the Republican nominee before the election. They’ll protect 0bama like flies on dog crap.
Wow, the LSM is getting desperate.
The Rats at PMSNBCLSD are getting desperate. LoL.
I'm reading 1984 for the first time in years...what you wrote sounds JUST like the book.
It was meant to be a warning. Not a field guide.
I call bullcrap! When I was 13 in 1978 and in NY State I had a C.E.T.A. job where I worked 10 hrs per week durinng school term and 25I hours per week during the summer as a janitor. I had kids on the playground calling me the ty d bowl kid but every two weeks I had a paycheck in my pocket. Years later when I was in US Army basic training I had a leg up on a lot of fellow trainees because I already know how to get a spit shine buffed floor thanks to my fiirst supervisor, Ted Manns.
There is nothing wrong with learning a good work ethic early in life.
Michael Hancock, assistant administrator for policy in the wage and hour division of the U.S. Department of Labor, is an ASS!
Likely also one of those that say our children are not getting enough exercise and becoming obese slobs!
I had to wait until I was 11. The paper required carriers to be 12 but I got tired of waiting and lied about my age.
So this is what the bottom of the barrel looks like. Crud everywhere. Needs to be scraped.
I went from a paper route to baby sitting to doing clean up work on construction sites..my friend had the church janitors job. I did need a work permit from my school Principle to work at 13. I wanted the money. We weren’t poor, but my folks did not give me money for nothin. The free market paid me better. At 15 I was making twice minimum wage working construction in the summer and doing proposal drawings at night. Plus homework and other things. Kids today veg out and think they have it hard. I loved those pay checks. From 15 on my parents didn’t give me a cent. They gave me all I have...it wasn’t money.
He’s definitely dropping out now. /s
Here’s hoping Newt doubles down and smacks common sense [back?] into these effin’ morons/parasites.
If your family is not rich and you are a mature child with good morals, self respect and skills, you love working for your own money no matter what the law is. If that law existed back then, I was jail bait. Every kid in my family was jail bait.
