In an unprecedented case of gross malfeasance, it appears that the Captain of the giant cruise ship, Costa Concordia, purposely ordered his crew to CHANGE course, in a maritime version of a fly-by for entertainment purposes:
Questions also swirled about why the ship had navigated so close to the dangerous reefs and rocks that jut out off Giglio's eastern coast, amid suspicions the captain might have ventured too close while carrying out a maneuver to entertain tourists on the island."
As a result of steering the ship off-course, it unexpectedly hit a reef. (Captain Shettino insists these rocks where uncharted so most likely the result of sabotage, and additionally accused his helmsman of acting stupidly by getting too close to the uncharted rocks.) When the ship hit the reef it ripped a large, gapping hole in the hull of his ship, breaching its integrity. At this point the giant ocean-faring vessel started taking on ballast, listing dangerously portside (left); which is to say, it was sinking.

stupid is as stupid does...
That only 5 deaths are confirmed and 17 still missing is a miracle.
It is probably premature to question who insured this $428 million dollar ship (Lloyds?) and whether or not it could be repaired and used again.
Looking at the lean of the ship it appears to be half submerged in salt water. I don’t know how long it’d take to seal off the gash, pump water out of it but it doesn’t take long to destroy stuff inside with salt water.
bump
Aww, nothing a little duct tape won’t fix.
Ain’t nothing a little duct tape won’t fix (if you also got enough Bondo).
That boat has a draft of 26’ 10” but the waters there run about 120’. He must hugged the coastline just a little too close!
Good joke that relates to this thread.
What does SS stand for? Steam Ship
What does RMS stand for? Royal Mail Steamer
What does HMS stand for? Her Majesty’s Ship.
What does the Italian navy’s AMB stand for? Atsa My Boat!
Well the Shettino has hit the fan on this one, This goes way past something like hitting a sandbar and being embarrassed by being towed off, people died and the ship is trashed. I don’t think that poor smuck realizes how much trouble he is in, some public figures over there without a doubt will be greasing their careers with his blood.
I’m not sure what to believe yet. But,,,,, they’re worried that it might slip off the reef into 240 deep water. Why aren’t there any tugs there to make sure it doesn’t move?
The ship is sinking and leaning badly and the captain tells the crew leave him alone, he wants to finish his waffle? I guess before the plate slides off the table or sumfin?
That’s a whole new kind of waffling.

Yep. I bet the Amish are responsible.
Underwater photos of the boat.

I didn't realize that their shares were worth that much to begin with.
Alan and Laurie Willits, a Canadian couple celebrating their 30th wedding anniversary, were watching the magic show when they felt a lurch as if from a severe steering manoeuvre followed by a loud scraping sound along the side of the ship.
As soon as we all heard the noise, the magician was off he didnt hang around, said Mrs Willits, 52.
As the magician fled, the rest of his act was stuck on stage.

Earlier reports placed the Captain in the bar, with some arm candy. Drinking. Now in the state room drinking wine. This bastard drank more skippering a ship than I do watching football!
Latest report states ship has moved slightly, necessitating a halt in rescue ops. They fear it will plummet downward 100 meters to watery grave...
Pleased Captain Hazelwood found a new vocation!
I wonder how deep the water is there. It’s going to be a great dive site if it really goes down.
My two cents...
Because I am a playwrite and devoted mystery fan, a
plot came to mind. The Captain may have “helped” to
create an accident so that a floundering cruise line
could collect insurance.
Of course the accident was designed to avoid loss of
life. Oops!
