The Rick bubble has burst, and will not re-inflate. If he faces up to this and stands aside, I believe that most of his supporters will gravitate to Newt.
I don't know that he'll leave the race without giving it his best shot in SC. Perhaps he and his campaign managers believe in miracles. I don't know. If he stays in and splits the SC vote with Newt, he gives Romney a burst of momentum that will be hard to stop down the line.
You don’t ask the guy who is statistically tied for first in SC to drop out and support the guy who’s behind by 15% or more.
And once again, here we are with the Iowa bullsh*t. Presidents Robertson, Gramm, Grassley, Huckabee, and Keyes will see you now. Iowa is the Fool’s Gold of the GOP Primary process and it is DISTURBING that every election cycle leads to another batch of pipe-dreamers thinking it has any meaning in a national campaign.
Santorum wouldn’t last five minutes if Romney turned his money machine against him.
Romney is nuts too, just in a more covert way. Domestically, Romney will be 20X more destructive than Ron Paul.
Seriously, at least Ron Paul offers escape from socialism. I don’t like Paul’s foreign policy muchbut I hate corporate-socialist technocrats like Mitt Romney much more.
Romney’s pac has just starteed carpet bombing Rick S in FL. Starting to see more & more ads this weekend
I can’t agree with you solely because of his attitude toward Israel and the Islamists. He wants to unilaterally disarm both us and Israel against them. I’d rather be an alive socialist than a dead libertarian if that’s what the choice comes down to.
Keep it up Republicans! Nominate Romney and assure an independent run for president. I REFUSE TO VOTE FOR ROMNEY! NEVER, EVER GONNA HAPPEN!
I’m with you UPS. We have 2 enemies, the left and the GOP establishment. Run a 3rd party conservative.
It's become an embarrassment, frankly. No candidate who was truly made of the stuff his supporters claim, or who honestly stood for all of the lofty things that are in his platform, would stay in the race with only 5% average support.
At this point, the eyebrows raise, and the gaze narrows.
He’s against all of the covert action we’ve been doing against Al Queda and Iran. And if he would let Israel get attacked and destroyed like he says, which they will be if Iran gets a nuke and we don’t openly protect Israel, we’d have a second Holocaust and we would be next on the target list. Socialism can be rolled back, even if gets to the point of Greece and massive austerity measures, but mass extinction of a country’s people or a race cannot be rolled back.
Yes, it’s become puerile and embarrassing at this point.
No hard feelings against Perry, but he should’ve went with his 1st decision to throw in the towel after IA.
"ATLANTA As the GOP races settles into South Carolina, Mitt Romney isnt enjoying the double-digit lead he held in New Hampshire, according to a survey conducted Wednesday night.
The former Massachusetts governors lead is so small in the Palmetto State that hes essentially tied with Newt Gingrich, according to a poll for the Augusta Chronicle and Savannah Morning News conducted by InsiderAdvantage/Majority Opinion Research.
Romneys 23 percent and Gingrichs 21 fall within the 3.6 percent margin of error. Rick Santorum, who came in second in the Iowa caucus is in third pace in South Carolina with 14 percent, while Ron Paul, the runner up in New Hampshire, is effectively tied with him at 13.
Jon Huntsman has 7, and Rick Perry has 5 while 17 percent are undecided or favor a candidate not offered as a choice in the survey."
That’s the way I see it. Every election, we’re asked to “suck it up” one more time and vote for the establishment pick for the good of the country. And every time the fools do as they’re told. I’m done with that. We should not be rewarding the GOP elites with our votes. The tea party either stands for something or it doesn’t need to exist.
John Great point.
What’s the difference between these polls other than the date?
Trouble is a "firm core" for many conservatives seem to mean "firmly hating anyone with a D after their name." Newt showed that he could work with Bill Clinton for the good of the country as a whole without compromising his core principles. Obsessing over terms like "swiftboating" is totally asinine, especially since a reporter brought up that term to Newt, Newt didn't bring it up. The nitpicky stuff people like you pin on Newt is absolutely beyond the pale. Your goal is not to achieve conservative goals in the government, your goal is to nitpick people for being "less conservative" than you so you can feel smug and superior.
To say that Newt does not have core principles despite the massive power he had and the extremely conservative things he got passed is just ludicrous. Look at any Republicans in the Congress since the '90s and tell me that they stuck their neck out and went out on a limb for conservatives more than Newt did.
Calling Newt "anti-capitalism" is simply a strawman. He solely criticized Romney's use of government largesse and accounting tricks to make profits on the backs of other people, all of which has been explained in this thread. You need to explain why you believe Romney's business practices show the right kind of leadership we need in the White House. They are the equivalent of someone taking out a mortgage they can't afford and then expecting the government to bail them out and let them stay in their house.
I firmly believe socialism will destroy this countryif left unchecked, there simply won’t be an America left to defend anybody, not even itself.
Which is why I can without hesitation support Ron Paul over Mitt Romney.
BTW, you’ll appreciate these posts, which thoroughly address the “Newt supported Dede Scozzafava” crack, as well as the Nancy Pelosi couch.

I'm not sure. I went to the RCP link to have a look, but I didn't get it either.
I just don't have the investigative energy this late at night to sort it out. Maybe tomorrow after work.
