Armed with surgical masks and hand-made placards drawing attention to clean air, Westfield Concerned Citizens continued their opposition to a proposed 431 megawatt natural gas fired electrical generating plant here Thursday.
The group, which formed shortly after the $400 million plant was proposed in 2008 by Pioneer Valley Energy Center, was among more than 150 people at North Middle School attending a public hearing on a federal Environment Protection Agency pending air quality permit for the plant.
The mask makes a statement, said registered nurse Gail S. Bean of Westfield. The mask prevents toxins from entering the lungs, she explained while passing out the surgical masks to anyone who indicated support for the concerned citizens group.
Mary Ann Babinski, a founding member of the group, said We are asking EPA to deny the air quality permit based on evidence we have showing clean energy does not come from a smokestack.

Remind me to not trust that nurse.
It’s just absolutely jaw-dropping how stupid people are getting.
So...tell me Mary Ann...where does clean energy come from?
If smoke stacks (On a gas fired plant? What smoke?) aren't your cup of tea then nuclear power generation is something you should get behind. Ohhhhh wait. You and your hippy cohorts poisoned that well decades ago. So...again I ask, where does clean energy come from?
Oh.......Masach.....Massachew.....New England.
I wonder where Westfield is located.
Simple solution, remove their electrical meters to their homes and businesses. Also make sure they are not using fossil fuels to heat their homes.
“On a gas fired plant? What smoke?”
Better yet..
What smoke stack?
Natural gas doesn’t require a ‘smoke stack’.
All it needs is a ‘vent pipe’.
No stack and no smoke.
Yep. These fools need the power to go out for a few days so they can fully understand their stupidity.
How many of them heat their homes with natural gas or oil?
That was actually Nurse Ratched.
As for Conn. residents and EPA - let ‘em freeze in the dark if they don’t build and operate the power plant.
I was ROFL at this, just knew it was MA! These fools are the first to start screaming during power outages to have their power turned back on.
Then I realized just how sad this truly is. These people don’t want want power plants. It is as simple as that. They staged the same protests over bioplants, and are forcing, with their buddies at the EPA, coal plants to shut down, when something like 80% of the power plants in the NE run on coal.
That's easy - it comes from those magic spots on the wall.
New York is currently suing PA for generating a lot of NYC’s power with coal.
Wouldn’t it be ironic if NY won?
NIBBY non-sense on steroids!
No matter how “Clean” any source of energy they will not want it built, particularly in their area.
NG is not “Clean” enough for them, Solar uses too many “rare earth” elements that have toxic residue, Windmills kill birds, Coal is “Dirty”, Nuclear is NUCLEAR!
Clearly Propane, or even Hydrogen, would not be “Clean” enough for them!
Let them freeze in the dark, it’s the only way they can prove their piety to the “Green” (Red) zealots!
It provides steam for heat and how water for WSU and I have yet to hear of people dying early due to being exposed to it.
Stuck on Stupid is only one of many names these idiots could be called
Out of all the different articles about this, every single one says that Gail S. Bean is a registered nurse.
Funny, the directory of registered nurses doesn’t have her name in it.

Knowing people who live in the Westfield area, the center of Westfield and major roadways have natural gas. Outside of that it is oil or propane.
Or maybe Harry Potter's wand. Yeah...I bet she'd like Harry Potter's wand. (He said as he opened the door for some jokester to step through...)
