New Poll: Gingrich Attack Ads Against Romney Working in SC
National Review - The Corner ^ | 1-12-2012 | Maggie Gallagher

Instead of getting a bounce, Romney’s poll numbers are sinking in South Carolina. As I suggested, this ad attack is powerful. He’s followed it up by painting him as governing pro-abortion. Krauthammer is right — Romney’s got to show he can respond.

If these attacks work in a Republican primary, imagine how effective Obama will find them in November.

BTW, no signs yet that the negative ads are hurting Gingrich, either.

"Amen! They weren't complaining when lies were told about Newt in Iowa, but all of a sudden the whining about attack ads is becoming a crescendo."

Spot on. It all makes me so mad I could spit. Here's the chronology:

1) Newt spends all Summer and Fall campaigning EXCLUSIVLY in a positive fashion, going out of his way in fact to say kind things about all of his opponents;

2) Myth, RuPaul - and most disappointingly, Perry - run millions of dollars in negative ads against Newt in Iowa, most of which are outright lies or dramatic twists of truth.

3) Newt never reseponds in kind to the above.

4) The ads work, and Romney and his surrogates in the MSM respond to assertions that the ads were unfair by saying "Hey you've gotta have broad shoulder." No one in the MSM bothers to even explore or care about the accuracy of the ads. The only meme is: "Hey, tough it out and don't whine."

5) Newt finally says: "OK, I guess that's how I'll have to play." And people supporting him run entirely TRUTHFUL ads about Romney.

6) MSM responds by saying how angry Newt is, how mean-spirited he seems and how unfair the attacks are.

Anybody see anything wrong with this picture?

Hank

He did it because I heard some of these firms Bain did their chopshop job on were located in South Carolina. Almost seems like a divine hand reached down to lift Newt up just when he needed it.

Also, I am not convinced that the issues-oriented ads really work as well as emotional-appeal ads like the Bain stuff. So many people just don’t understand the issues and vote on likability and stuff like that. Like the FOX bimbo the other day who was cheering that Romney “looks like a president!” An intellectual argument is, perhaps unfortunately, not going to be as effective as something which impugns a person’s likability. Even the great John Kerry windsurfing ad was based more on a matter of trust than on what Kerry’s positions on the issues were.

Great post. The scum sucking RINOs that control the Party fear we conservatives, moreso than Obama and the Leftists.

“All Newt is going to end up doing is giving material to Obama and Co. to use against Mitt in the general.”

So what? You voting for Mitt?

You want to lush old pics? What about popping up these pics - Half Truther

Mittens signing the legislation nearest/dearest to his heart, RomneyCare, yucking it up with his Comrades.

He says, out of one side of his mouth :"I will abolish Obamacare." but out of the other, he lets slip it's not because he disagrees with it - he just wants it implemented by the states, like he did.

Glorifying his friend, Teddy, and thanking him for helping him get Romneycare passed.

as to your worn out canard intimating that Newt if for global warming - re the old pic with peelface - you conventionality ignore his testimony in 2009 on global warming - and if you can find anything that any ONE of the other candidates have said about global warming that is as adamant against it or as informed - do enlighten us. Newt lays Gore out in lavender/ (live links next post. I post these, not to inform you, as I realize these are inconvenient truths you 'll brush aside - but there as still a majority of honest Freepers here who may not have seen these.

You ask: “(Do we want a guy who is worth $190 million and owns fifteen mansions being our leader?)”

Mittens says he knows what’s it’s like worry about losing a job- about getting a pink slip.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wM6WdifXgnU

Treating the American people as if they were idiots again.

Like we don’t know he grew up with several silver spoons in is mouth He’s never had to worry about paying bills or keeping a roof over his head.

Condescending snob.

Newt should just run these - Romney Himself:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=7OQoBxZZPqU

But watch his body language in the debates and other clips - and his stuttering when he’s brought up on something. The man, for all his wealth, has a need to be liked. that’s why he flips and flops all over the spectrum, depending on who he’s dealing with.

On the other hand, he suffers from the Prince Gore syndrome. Both brought in in super wealth by powerful political fathers, raised as Princes of the realm, surrounded by sycophants at court as the heir to the throne.

He was NOT a moderate in Mass. He was totally on board with the most liberal of them all - his buddy, Teddy. He’ll sell his soul to the highest bidder.

He was against the Contract with America

http://www.realclearpolitics.com/video/2011/12/09/romney_in_1994_contract_with_america_a_mistake.html

Here - adamant he was an Independent when Reagan was Pres - wants to distance himself form his - then

It will only be Romney if conservatives continue to split their vote among three candidates.

Put Newt head to head against Romney, and Romney will be annihilated.

I think it hurts the GOP because the longer those guys stay in, the more they split the vote. The more they split the vote, the more likely Romney wins the endorsement, the less likely a conservative If all but 1 of the others dropped out (your pick), they would win the primary over Romney. Romney will not beat Obama, and even if the does, he’ll behave just like Obama. Same thing, same results, only the Republicans get the blame for it. As soon as he takes office, all them 2012 extensions are gonna hit.

Anyways, I trust Newt as far as I can throw a man-hole cover... not very far. I bet a few years from now, it’ll come out, that Romney paid him (somehow) to stay in, to keep the vote split. Just like what Thompson did for McCain. Newt has expensive habits, and he’s a snake-oil-salesman, and so is Romney.

I find it curious that the only attacks that Newt is throwing at Romney are attacks the DNC had already prepared. No new dirt, nothing devastating. I’d wager those attacks were pre-screened, and the Romney handlers OK’d them ahead of time, seeing as how they were coming already, they might as well diffuse the situation while they can keep Mitt on queue.
