MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) Memphis officials on Thursday approved naming a city street after the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., nearly 44 years after the civil rights leader was killed in the city.
The 10 members of the Memphis and Shelby County Land Use Control Board voted unanimously to re-name a nine-block downtown stretch as Dr. Martin Luther King Avenue. Previously called Linden Avenue, it runs in front of the FedExForum, where the Memphis Grizzlies play their home games, and parallel to Beale Street, the famous tourist drag.
The street also runs near the Clayborn Temple, where King rallied with striking sanitation workers days before he was assassinated by James Earl Ray on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel on April 4, 1968. King also led a march on Linden Avenue during the strike.
The city already had a section of Interstate 240 dedicated to King, but the naming of a prominent street in the city's tourist district is being seen as a symbol that the city is finally taking steps to heal the wound caused by the assassination

Be careful.
There’s already schools named after Barack Hussein Obama, Jr. With more to come. Roads too; I’m sure.
All in parts of town that you best not be caught in after dark.
As Dave Chappelle said, if you find yourself on the corner of MLK and Malcolm X, you should run for you life!
I`m certain that if the Reverend King were to return today, he would be Honored to walk down any street named after him. He might wear a flak jacket............... but ....................
In 20 years or less, streets all over the country will be renamed Barak Hussein Obama Ave.
In only about 10-12 more years the prisons will start filling with inmates with the first name of Barak.
Got MLK? Someone had to say it.
I think he would be disgusted of what has become of the ‘civil rights’ movement. Probably want to slap jessy jack’son up side the head.
LOL! It even claims to have MLK's blood on it!
Next will be Cesar Chavez Blvd., which will probably also be located in a seedy part of town.
MLK Boulevard is where a lot of the state offices are located. There’s more thievery there than there is in North Minneapolis or in the Capitol Heights area of Saint Paul.
If this is any indication, yep:
I think they have one of those in Austin TX.
Been there, done that. People are always getting shot down there in the Rainier Valley district because of all of the diversity.
Here in San Antonio we had Durango Blvd. A steet so named for over a hundred years. The majority of property owners on Durango Blvd. liked the name and did not want the City to change it. But our hispanic City Council wanted to stick it to the whities and rename it Cesar Chavez.
It got ugly. It even went to court. The majority of SA citizens wanted to keep the name Durango Blvd. But after spending $100,000.00; the hispanics at City Hall got their way.
Downtown Memphis, Beale St. and the Fed X Forum area is probably one of the safest area’s of Shelby County. Anyone that says different is just not in the know.,
We go down to the Fed Ex Forum all the time and other parts of Downtown at night. It is well lit and MPD is always around. Downtown Memphis the the place to be at night.
Chris Rock has great line about if your car runs out of gas on any street in America named Martin Luther King Blvd..
Get out of the car and RUNNNNNNN!!!!!! Or you’re gonna die!!!
Who!
GO TIGERS
That'll change once they name the nearby street after MLK.
