All Food Lion stores on the First Coast, including a dozen in Jacksonville, are closing, company officials announced Wednesday night.
The stores will be closed within 30 days, the company said.
Stores in Clay, St. Johns, Nassau, Baker and Alachua counties are also closing. In addition, the Food Lion in Waycross is among the Georgia stores slated to be closed.
The company will convert its Food Lion in Lake City to a Harveys store. All of the other stores in Florida are closing.

There are regions of the US where unemployment is going down. These national statistics aren’t reflecting a true picture...just a national picture.
As for Food Lion...they had a business situation where they simply couldn’t compete. If you run an upscale grocery shop in a depressed area...you’ve got a year of games that you can play, but you really need business to start picking up after two years. Food Lion simply wasn’t seeing an improvement.

When I lived in FL, I used to love to shop at Food Lion.
This is very sad news for the folks there.
Hostess Brands Inc., the maker of Twinkies and Wonder Bread, is seeking bankruptcy protection, blaming it on pension and medical benefits obligations to its union employees. Yes, there is a parasitical component of the union system that spells sickness and death to its business hosts. In this highly competitive age with its high speed information technology, a company needs to be fleet footed. Unions are out of step with this high tech age. All they do is put lead weights on a company’s ability to adapt as it sucks out its life’s blood.
Bump that!
Oregon is always behind the worst of the total US picture.

Food Lion was upscale?
Publix in Mount Pleasant remains, and Harris-Teeter and the “The Hog” remain ...
LOL! Wasn’t Food Lion the place that was caught washing their “fresh” fish with bleach to make it smell better and remove those ugly signs of decay?
Most of the Food Lions around here (near Jacksonville) were anything but upscale, and one of their problems was that they never adapted to a changing market as subdivisions and condos opened around Jax and the area became more upscale, or even simply as food tastes changed.
Winn-Dixie, on the other hand, is doing a very good job of repositioning itself.
Winn Dixie was just acquired by Bi-Lo.

A&P in the northeast is doing badly too. Rumors of it’s demise are out there...
We shopped at the grocery stoor on Richmond Rd in Williamsburg (near the outlet mall not to far from the Yankee Candle store) this Summer while on vacation, the former Food Lion was (I believe) was a Bloom.
Good to see it is going back to Food Lion.
I was there when it started too. All those “Bell, Book & Sandal” creatures that flood into Oregon in the 1960s to “live off the land”.
Yes, they’re a good fit. Bi-Low has been doing the same thing, repositioning. They used to be a low-end market but they have some very nice new stores now and I think they and Winn Dixie will work out well and this will avoid overlapping.
A&P’s stores have looked kind of shabby for awhile now. It’s a pity. That company has been around for a really, really long time.
