1 in 6 adults binge drink - and in Wisconsin, even more

ATLANTA - College-age drinkers average nine drinks when they get drunk, government health officials said Tuesday. That surprising statistic is part of a new report highlighting the dangers of binge drinking, which usually means four to five drinks at a time. Overall, about 1 in 6 U.S. adults surveyed said they had binged on alcohol at least once in the previous month, though it was more than 1 in 4 for those ages 18 to 34. And that's likely an underestimate: Alcohol sales figures suggest people are buying a lot more alcohol than they say they are consuming. Health officials estimate that about half of the beer, wine and liquor consumed in the United States by adults each year is downed during binge drinking.

That's to be expected of beginners.

They'll ease into their zones and overcome this lightweight weakness.

There they go again -- liberals dumbing down the meaning of "binge." Four or five drinks at a time? In my day we might have called that "alcoholism," but they don't know what a binge is.

Hint: it's measured in days, not drinks. Now, excuse me, please. I have to go pour a cocktail.

Germans settled in Wisconsin so the centuries of beer drinking before even arriving in the New World had altered their DNA so they can handle more of it!

You might be from Wisconsin if:

you don’t have a coughing fit from one sip of Pabst Blue Ribbon...
you were unaware there is a legal drinking age...
you know what to do with a Blatz...
your definition of a small town is one that only has one bar...
the “Big Three” means Miller, Old Milwaukee & PBR...
you loved it when the Brewers hit a home run so the lady would slide from the huge keg into the mug of beer...
you know it’s traditional for the bride and groom to go bar hopping between the ceremony and the reception...

Yes indeed, and the hard core all settled in LaCrosse, where binge drinking is an alien concept, known mainly to people who don't live in LaCrosse.

Hell, their definition of “Binge” Drinking is what we used to call “Lunch.”

You’re right, a Binge is measured in days, not numbers of drinks.

Frigging lightweights :)

I was there last year during the Wisconsin/TCU game. The bar looked like Bourbon Street at 6:00am Sunday morning, before the sweepers came in.

Most guidelines recommend a maximum of two or three drinks per day as the safe upper limit, but here a binge is only four to five drinks? So binging begins with only one more drink beyond the guideline? That seems strange.
