President Obama's surrogates, not giving up hope that the themes of the "occupy movement" will help his reelection and push Congress to back Democratic jobs ideas, are looking to the birthday and federally-sanctioned holiday of what Obama activist Van Jones calls the "original Occupier," Martin Luther King Jr., to spark action on the streets of America.
Jones, part of a group called "Rebuild the Dream,"- which sees itself as a liberal version of the Tea Party movement- said the gatherings will kick off what he sees as a "turbulent, exciting" year, led by civil rights leaders pushing a new agenda of social justice.
"What are you doing this weekend for MLK Day? It's our only national holiday about social justice, yet too often, MLK Day feels like a Hallmark Card. This year, let's do it differently," he tells backers in an e-mail. "Rebuild the Dream members are hosting MLK Day Movement Meet-ups across the country to celebrate Dr. King -- the original Occupier -- and link the Civil Rights Movement with today's struggle for an economy that works for all."
The group has made a video to share at the meetings, meant to kick-start the movement's actions this year.
When Jones announced the new group, he provided a blueprint of goals including taxing the rich, cutting military, agriculture and oil subisidies, increasing funding for nurses and first-responders, providing government health care, and boosting union rights.
Jones, initially Obama's effective green jobs czar, was pushed out after news reports revealed that he disparaged congressional Republicans. Below is his MLK note.
Dear Paul,
What are you doing this weekend for MLK Day? It's our only national holiday about social justice, yet too often, MLK Day feels like a Hallmark Card. This year, let's do it differently.
Rebuild the Dream members are hosting MLK Day Movement Meet-ups across the country to celebrate Dr. King -- the original Occupier -- and link the Civil Rights Movement with today's struggle for an economy that works for all.
Neighbors and friends will gather to watch a great video we made, plus engage in a special discussion about how we strengthen our movements in 2012.
Find an MLK Meet-up near you, or host one of your own.
2012 will be a turbulent, exciting year. It's important for us to get together and get ready. This is your chance to touch base with friends and like-minded folks in your area, and start the new year right.
There is a lot for us to fight for, and people are continuing Dr. King's struggle every day in the 21st century. With a rising movement sweeping the country, let's gather together and ask: What would Dr. King and other civil rights leaders do today? How can we continue their legacy in 2012 and beyond?
MLK Day is an opportunity to take a day on, not a day off. The meet-ups will be an opportunity to join with those who share your same passion for positive change. It's a chance to look back and look ahead -- let's look at one of the most important movements of our past as a springboard for the ongoing fight for justice.
Join a discussion in your area, or host one of your own.
Century after century, generation after generation, countless people of all different backgrounds have continued to arrive on America's shores. Beyond our differences there lies the promise that maybe we can carve a better future for ourselves and our children and our children's children, with opportunity and justice for all. This was the dream our country was founded on, and Dr. King's dream throughout the Civil Rights Movement. Let's gather this MLK Day and commit to continuing Dr. King's fight for the dream.
Thanks for being a part of, and believing in, this movement,
Van, Billy, Natalie, Ian, Jim, Somer and the Rebuild the Dream Innovation Fund team
The Occupunks, however, have sometimes taken to defying the Bummer. They could end up biting off the hand that feeds them.
You can bet they’ve got a big crisis planned.
The only thing idiots like him do is put more of a victimhood mentality into blacks which makes them act less responsible and as a result you got more black kids running amok without any parental supervision which leads to more crime and of course more screams by liberals to infringe on the 2nd Amendment.
What a load. Dr. King and his supporters never left rat-infested piles of garbage for others to pick up weeks later.
It’s going to be the worst year in my memory, and I remember the 60s.
I wouldn’t be surprised if February turns out to the coldest month on records. Hopefully.
Jones, initially Obama's effective green jobs czar, was pushed out after news reports revealed that he disparaged congressional Republicans.Article author Bedard is quite wrong. Jones outed himself as a Communist.
The so-called Occupy movement is becoming persona non grata and will pull Hussein down.
The shrieking fairies and carping harpies of the Ministry of Twooth (e.g., George Stepanopolous and Andrea Mitchell) will swoon over the idea of a mass movement--
--however, the people on the ground cleaning up after this movement report hypodermic needles in addition to the organic output of the movement.
King did not preach hate and he promoted God-fearing, fatherhood, family, live babies, and working.
None of which are attractive in the least to Van Kampf.
Just as Hussein has nothing in common with Teddy Roosevelt patriot and man of action, the Occupunks have nothing in common with Dr. King, at the last a man of conscience.
Did Hoover wiretap him to catch bimbo eruptions. Was Hoover just good friends with Clyde.
Jones is almost right; Occupunks will make it a turdulent year, but Hussein's defeat will redeem it.
Odumbo’s numbers tank....warnings, are nothing more than threats
I believe that.
I hope they do something drastic, because if Congress has to act, the action will be favorable towards the Republicans.
I think most people believe OWS’ers are lefties and any drastic actions and destructions will likely be blamed on the Democrats, regardless of what the media says.
Flash mob violence is going to surge up.
Screw the gun laws, anyone especialy women, who is not packing a heater is suicidal.

Klobuchar “As Van Jones has said, who is a guy who has written a book about the green collar economy, when you think about the green economy, don’t think about Buck Rogers; think about joe six-pack putting on a green hard hat. Think about Rosie the riveter manufacturing solar panels and wind turbines. This is President Obama’s plan — jobs, jobs, jobs.”
Someone should point out to Jones that King was a Republican.
I wouldn't go that far...it's America's only 'affirmative action' holiday.
Kevin Johnson (a former employee of a NBA team) virtually ordered city employees to consult Van Jones' writings for answers. Johnson is pushing hard to convert Sacramento city government to a strong-mayor government -- perhaps converting Sacramento into another Chicago on the urgings of Obama/Holder/Van Jones.
No wonder folks have bought A LOT of guns the past year.
Although now there are now store sales on Dr. MLK Day as well.
....So has gun sales.
