Hopefully things turn around for him in the upcoming states. I want to keep my outlook as positive as possible for those who would unseat Obama.

Another factor in the growing disaster of the open primary, in addition to the ones I’ve mentioned on a previous thread:
There is a growing interest in politics at election time.
I’ve been through many elections, and I have watched the growing trend of even the most jaded and distracted people suddenly becoming political pundits at election time. They do not watch politics full-time, as we at Free Republic and many others do. They only become engaged when the election is the hot news story, as they do with other hot news stories. So they are basically uneducated and are voting their hearsay-informed peer-value views.
I can always tell when one of them is talking, even before they reveal the depth of their ignorance: they switch willy-nilly to the football score or Beyonce’s baby. They are more interested in keeping up an entertaining monologue than they are in the issues.
I suppose this is a good thing in a way, as some of them may “graduate” to full-time obsession with the world outside of sports and celebrities. We can only hope so. And that they won’t infantilize politics too badly in the meantime.

It always cracks me up when someone, in the same paragraph, says first that Perry has so few votes he should get out, a d then if he gets out somehow that will turn the election around. If he’s got no support, there’s nobody to “move over” to the other candidates.
Anyway, Santorum did nothing in NH until after Iowa, and tied with Newt, who actually campaigned there and had money to spend (Santorum just got money, and he’s spending it in South Carolina, where the GOP gets to vote without democrats).

Going firmly for Santorum at present time. Its truly sad that we are getting Operation Chaos’ed AGAIN!! McCain last time, Romney-Paul this time. Agonizing. I am getting so tired of being represented by Dem Lite!
Well, I called it for Romney and Paul last weekend. That said, I thought Newt would make third, not Huntsman.
But other than that hiccup, I was pretty spot on.
The real test will be South Carolina... and then Super Tuesday. That’s when the candidates will start dropping like flies.

Agreed. But I think Newt’s past history of histronics and hysteria had made the error altogether unsurprising.
Moreover, Romney’s political operatives, led by the always crafty Stuart Stevens, are probably the best since Lee Atwater at behind-the-scenes tricks — “dirty” or otherwise. I’ll bet they were confident they could bait Newt into committing political seppaku, even if they didn’t know exactly how, when or where the inevitable explosion would eventually occur.
So the kind of cool, calm, collected and rational reponse outlined in your very sensible post was never a high probability outcome. It was probably about as likely as would be Ron Paul’s asking Ben Bernanke to be his running mate!
