Submitted by National Shooting Sports Foundation on Jan 10, 2012 For the fourth year in a row, anti-gun legislators from New York City have introduced firearms microstamping legislation (Assembly Bill 1157b) that would result in banning firearms in the Empire State. Microstamping is a patented process that micro-laser engraves the firearms make, model and serial number on the tip of the guns firing pin so that, in theory, it imprints the information on discharged cartridge cases.

As detailed in #55, all a cop has to do is see you in possession of a gun with the microstamp disabled, and he has an easy felony arrest to his credit. The cops will look for any opportunity to check your gun. If you are at the range, off-duty cops will check ejected brass. If you are involved in an act of self-defense at home, they take YOU away. Etc.
Let's say your wife decides to divorce you. All she has to do is to inform the police that you have tampered with the microstamping of your gun. Boom, you are under arrest for a felony, and not in a position to contest the divorce or child custody. She might even be the one who sanded down the microstamp, but try proving it.
Microstamping Bill might also have prevented that whole Lewinsky thing ...

Personally, I think the “ex-felons can’t have firearms” is more a threat to liberty than this stupid bill.
There are just so many felonies these days that it boggles the mind, for example if you assert that the people have the right to overthrow the government then you could be charged with:
US CODE, TITLE 18, PART I, CHAPTER 115, § 2385 — Advocating overthrow of Government [ http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/usc_sec_18_00002385——000-.html ]
Oddly enough, however, the Declaration of Independence *IS* law, and it too asserts the right of the people to overthrow a corrupt government: [ http://uscode.house.gov/download/pls/organiclaws.txt ]
IIRC, Obamacare makes it a felony not to have “qualifying” health insurance, so I foresee *LARGE* numbers of people becoming felons in 2014 when it comes into effect; the evil genius of that is that people will be beholden to the bureaucrats possessing/processing their paperwork.
The companies that market ignition interlocks and redlight cameras have done the same thing. Bribe politicians and judges. (oops sorry peeeerrrrrsuade)
This is simply taking by regulation plain and simple. This is no different than the slimy politician who lowers property values via regulation in order to have lower eminent domain costs for the government and lower land cost for their buddy developers.
this would also logically WEAKEN the firing pin leading to crisis failure. People will die b/c of this lame idea.
where do the class action suits start?
This is a follow the money situation.
who is this inventor?
is he a democrat?
Why? The gun danged sure isn't registered to them.
Where does that leave the owner when their gun gets stolen?
It is bad enough that a person might wonder what nefarious use their (former) firearm is being put to, but to possibly face charges because some thief stole their gun and someone used it in a crime really sucks.
This crap needs to be fought tooth and nail (again).
The only way to fight the New York mentality is to treat them like a hostile foreign nation.
Yabbut, they'll sue the former owner bacause they 'let' their gun get stolen and it was used to shoot that 'honor roll student who was just beginning to get their life back together at 26...' when the dope deal went sour...
This is mainly one for the tort lawyers, not any criminal investigators.
Requiring the imprinting of likely otherwise useless information with a system unlikely to work very long/well sounds like a 'gubmint priority' to me. All too typical.
It sure seems that way, but what did you expect from somewhere where Clinton and Schumer got elected? Must be something in the water up there.
Many of them never left Europe, they brought it with them.

Why bother to flee totalitarianism only to recreate it elsewhere in a slightly lesser form?
It just goes to show people will miss their chains like a lost watch.
Why does Harry Reid come to mind? He did that in NV. The Kelo case as well.
