GM challenges German brands with small Cadillac

(Reuters) - General Motors Co proved with the Chevrolet Cruze it can build a top-selling compact car, cracking a market long dominated by Japanese brands.

Now the No.1 U.S. automaker is targeting the entrenched German luxury brands with a more nimble compact Cadillac.

The 2013 ATS is central to GM chief executive Dan Akerson's mission to refashion Cadillac into a global luxury brand by winning over younger buyers with a sportier image.

From the start, GM took aim at BMW's 3-Series, the dominant car in this segment along with the Mercedes-Benz C-Class. Luxury compacts make up two-thirds of the luxury car market in the United States, according to Autodata.

GM has failed in this segment before, however. In the early 1980s, GM launched the Cadillac Cimarron, which Time magazine in 2007 called one of the 50-worst cars ever built.

That Caddy execs think the homosexual/metrosexual/mid-life crisis types who drive BMWs are gonna cross-shop Cadillacs is more proof that they’re incompetent boobs who should be Romney campaign workers instead.

BMW 3-series are the ground vehicles of choice for the F/A-18 jet jock community. Just sayin'.

“And I’m SURE the smart people at Government Motors won’t make that mistake again.”

Maybe the UAW might remember to put brakes on these cars...at least 90% of the time.

Sorry, but I’ve owned GM ju...er...cars.

Never again.

I’ll take a flooded Lexus before any GM ...er....thing.

“Now the No.1 U.S. automaker ......”

Toyota has been No. 1 for the last three years. Did GM retake the no. 1 slot in 2011?

I hope it’s not too late for Cadillac.

I recall shopping for my ‘97 Aurora back in the Twin Cities. I noticed the show room was populated with mostly geezers...

hehe

Not sayin’ they’re not great cars. The 3-series deserves its rep, especially the ones with bigger engines.

Just sayin’ cross-shopping with Caddies is a tall order with Infinti G and Lexus IS already out there.

I've been a "Chevy guy" as opposed to "Ford guy" since the 60s.
When you're a kid, working on the GM clunkers teach you how to fix cars and I did plenty of that.
Moved "up" to Pontiac-Olds-Buick, then finally bought my first Ford (Torino?) back in the early 80s.
I know drive Lincolns.

True that; those are great cars. But I hope Caddy can make a dent in the market. I like the brand, and I like the styling of the newer stuff they're putting out.

It’d better, if GM expects it to sell in Europe.
