Why Does Rick Perry Think He Can Win South Carolina?
TPM ^ | January 5, 2012 | Evan McMorris-Santoro

Posted on 01/07/2012 1:40:13 AM PST by Cincinatus' Wife

After his embarrassing result in Iowa, Rick Perry seemed to get the message the polls have been sending him for months: Republican voters just aren’t that into him. On caucus night, said he’d go back to Texas and figure out what comes next.

But within hours, Perry was sprinting into South Carolina, to make at least one more stand.

Given that the TPM Poll Average shows Perry pulling just 4.8% support in the state, a clear question arises: What on earth is he thinking?

The answer is, team Perry really thinks they can make it happen in South Carolina. The campaign says it really is all-in in the Palmetto State.

“At the end of the day, Gov. Perry is the only Washington outsider in this race, and the only candidate proposing real, substantive conservative reforms that will overhaul Washington, get America working again, and reintroduce fiscal sanity,” spokesperson Liz Mair told me. “Those are key attributes that South Carolina voters care about, especially fiscal, social and Tea Party conservatives who make up a sizable chunk of the electorate in the Palmetto State.”

Perry, of course, has made government reform a huge part of his agenda. He wants a part time Congress, he wants to cut lawmakers’ salaries, he wants to eliminate departments. It’s the kind of thing that supporters say could really resonate in South Carolina.

Mitt Romney’s new surrogate, Sen. John McCain, has been making that case out a line against Rick Santorum in South Carolina, where he points out that unlike the state’s senators, Santorum was pretty friendly to earmarks.

“I think it’s wrong for America and so does Sen. DeMint and so does Sen. Lindsey Graham who have been staunch fighters against earmark and pork barrel spending,” McCain told the South Carolina crowd. “And I know you’re proud of that.”

Indeed, South Carolina Republicans have a long history of backing the kind of candidates who want to turn their government upside down. Gov. Mark Sanford (R), who was popular before he took that Appalachian Trail trip, once brought live piglets down to the state house to protest what he said was the porky ways of state lawmakers.

But if Perry really thinks he can ride this wave in South Carolina, that tactic hasn’t yet been evidenced yet. His first ad in the state is a retread of a bio spot [Values] from November that doesn’t even mention his government reform plan.

But it does mention something else Perry backers say plays well in South Carolina: his military background and Christianity. Unlike New Hampshire, where Molly Ball showed how hard it can be for a values candidate to make a connection, South Carolina is a land where mixing in some ol’ time religion into your stump speech is very much appreciated in a lot of places. In addition, the state is home to a lot of veterans and active-duty military. Perry is a vet himself, and can speak their language, too.

The combo went down very well for Perry in South Carolina in months past. In August, I spent a couple days following Perry around the state. He was so famous back then a guy literally stopped on his way to pick up his wife who was going into labor to have her talk to Perry on a cell phone.

So, Perry’s dialing up South Carolina voters again. And he’s betting the house that they’ll still enthusiastically pick up the call.

Mocking Perry in this situation is simply absurd. Santorum literally had his name picked out of a hat and jumped from nothingness to the top of the ticket in Iowa within days, when just a week prior the whole state had been Newt’s territory. It’s all the more striking when you consider how much of an empty suit Santorum is. He’s about as inspiring as a rotted corpse in a bikini.

With Bachmann out, conservatives will hopefully give Perry another look. He’s the only candidate who doesn’t look and act like a plastic ken-doll. Hopefully Santorum implodes with his big government stuff fast enough for Perry to pick up the momentum. Being stuck with a Santorum or Romney ticket would be a sign from God that He is determined to let our country fall into decline.

Rick Perry Unwinds Before New Hampshire Debate At Texas Shooting Range Ready, aim fire. That’s apparently Texas Gov. Rick Perry’s idea of relaxation before returning to the campaign trail this weekend.

Ahead of Saturday night’s ABC News-Yahoo-WMUR debate in New Hampshire Perry took a few moments to himself at an Austin-area shooting range.

“Just relaxing a bit @ Red’s Range before we leave for New Hampshire!” @governorperry tweeted Friday along with a photo of himself wearing a green sweatshirt and a baseball cap with a firearm in hand........

...In a 2010 KTRK interview during his gubernatorial race, Perry called the shooting range “my golf.”

On Friday, Perry showed up at Red’s Indoor Range, which according to its website, “has been in the shooting range and retail firearms business for over 20 years, proudly serving central Texas with two high-quality indoor shooting facilities as well as two retail locations with extensive inventories of firearms, ammunition, and accessories.”...

Amelia Perry(right), mother of Texas Gov. Rick Perry, shows her quilts at a meeting of the Buffalo Gap Republican Woman's Club at Perini Ranch Steakhouse Friday.
Perry called this quilt her "Scarlet O'Hara" quilt, because she made it out of a curtain during a time she was getting cancer treatments and spending most of her time at home.

Perfect. Excellent post!

I am baffled as to how Santorum went from one of the other guys who will lose to Conservative Superman in a matter of days.

He and Newt are both big government "conservatives" and Santorum would be trampled by Obama and his machine.

I agree that there is no point in mocking Gov. Perry at this point. I would point out though, that just about every non-Romney candidate has had their chance to shine, and so far, fate has not shined twice on any of them. Once the electorate moves on, it has been for good.

And now? The time is too late.

It’s Santorum or Romney. That’s the choices left to us.

Santorum isn’t my first choice. Or my second. That said, Romney is no choice, at all.

Rick Perry on Congressional Insider Trading [:24]

Nov. 13, 2011: “Pelosi fires back at ‘60 Minutes’ report on ‘soft corruption’”

Perry’s govt reform speech "This is not red meat. This is raw meat, still steaming from the cow"

The Vetoes of Rick Perry - As Texas governor, he broke records and earned conservative support.

Perry: Uproot and Overhaul Washington

The Perry Plan: Energizing American Jobs and Security

The Perry Economic Plan: Cut, Balance and Grow

[snip] “Dynamic Tax Score for RickPerry.org, Inc. Proposal:

Based on the higher GDP estimates forecast by the dynamic scoring exercise, the Perry proposal will not only lead to an increase in overall economic activity and jobs, but will also lead to higher federal revenues in the long term. In fact, the analysis suggests that revenues could be as much as $406.8 billion higher than under the static model by 2020, and could be as high as 19.5 percent of GDP.

The dynamic score of the proposal suggests that lower flatter taxes could generate both more revenue than the current tax code, and significantly more economic growth over time. With increasing demands on the Federal government from growing entitlements, higher pension expenses and interest on the debt, it will be necessary to increase the size of the economy – and the tax base – in order to generate significantly higher revenues. Table 7 shows how the Perry proposals would do this over a seven year period.’ [snip] Tax Proposal Score PDF

Ridiculous. Santorum got his name picked out of a hat and got to where he is now today. I like Santorum over Newt, but he has no presence, no charisma, and nothing original to offer. Hopefully he’ll implode soon and Perry will rocket up to first in the same bizarre way this guy did. Your fatalism is not warranted as of yet. Let me know when/if Santorum wins SC, then we’ll start committing seppuku for the guy.

Perry Wins IPad and IPhone Vote (We CAN take on China and win!)…….”While the rest of the country has been suffering from Obama-itis (too much government regulations and power hungry unionism), Texas has been trying to make itself attractive to business (by limiting regulations, empowering free work rules, limiting frivolous lawsuits, educating ALL its people, limiting taxes) Which brings me back to the IPad and IPhone. As many of you know (well, at least the tech-knowledgeable among us), the brains of the IPAD and IPhone is the A5 chip. These chips are now made in Texas in a new $3.6 Billion facility. How big is this new facility? Well, to put it in terms any Texan would understand: Nine football fields. This is a major facility:

The A5 chip inside Apple’s iPad 2 and iPhone 4S is now being produced stateside (In Texas), according to Reuters. Sources familiar with Apple’s production details told the news organization that Samsung Electronics is now handling production of the A5 in Austin, Texas. Among manufactured products, the state’s leading export category is chemical manufactures, which accounted for $38.4 billion (20 percent) of Texas’ total merchandise exports in 2008. Other top 2008 manufactured exports were computers and electronic products ($35.2 billion), machinery manufactures ($27.3 billion), and petroleum and coal products ($25.3 billion).”…….

"Another new measure made tightening air quality permits on the oil and gas industry more difficult. That law, which Perry signed in June, requires the Texas environmental agency to analyze the effect of new regulation on the economy - including how it might hurt a company - before implementation. The economic impact could override the environmental benefit of the new regulation. The new law reflects Perry's contention that global warming is a questionable theory and that regulation always creates an adverse business climate." Perry Slashed Environmental Enforcement in Texas

Indeed.....

Rick Perry Scares the Media & Democrats to Death GOP consultant Mark McKinnon says that the editor of a major newspaper told him, "We plan to declare war on Rick Perry and do all in our power to crush him."

Mr. McKinnon was outraged. "No pretense of integrity, professionalism or of unbiased news gathering," he wrote in Investors' Business Daily.

But I doubt he was surprised. This is what the "mainstream" media did to Sarah Palin in 2008, and what likely is in store for anyone Republicans nominate.

But liberals will go after the Texas governor with special venom because he is anti- intellectual, prays in public, takes the Constitution seriously and sometimes carries a handgun, Walter Shapiro wrote in The New Republic.

"It's almost as if Perry's political persona was constructed by bundling together all the fears and phantoms in the left-wing anxiety closet." he said. “…

MONTANA: Legal gamesmanship threatens our energy future “Texas Gov. Rick Perry is able to boast about job growth under his watch, noting that over 265,000 jobs, or nearly 37 percent of the jobs created nationwide since the summer of 2009, have been created in the Lone Star state.

Recent headlines highlight two major resource development projects slogging through endless legal and regulatory challenges. Investment flees this kind of uncertainty, so Montanans interested in the future economic stability of this state should be wary of the signals we send…” --- [relates short history of 2 outrageous examples] --

“The common experience for Tongue River Railroad and Tonbridge Power is this: Even if you play by the rules, even if you follow the letter of the law, even if you engage with the public during a planning process, even if you get formal approval from the regulatory authorities, you are certain to face organized opposition whose sole intent is to frustrate project development to the point of financial starvation…...................”

CALIFORNIA: …..“Texas Gov. Rick Perry has become a folk hero for people like Stewart as he's marketed his state as a low-cost and business-friendly alternative to California, which is fertile job-hunting ground for Perry………….

"They're doing something right down there," Stewart said of what he dubs the "Texas miracle." "Gov. Perry will go anywhere, any time, to try to recruit companies into Texas."

Perry has taken the state's regulatory process and managed it himself, Stewart said………

[CA Economic Development Corporation President Mark] Lascelles emphasized that it does no good to belabor California's regulatory environment.

"Unfortunately, we can't avoid it. We have to deal with it," he said. Source

Rick Perry helps Mitt Romney by staying in the ‘12 GOP POTUS race, and this doesn’t help advance U.S. conservatism! In fact, who does the best in advancing U.S. conservatism, when all of the remaining candidates for ‘12 GOP POTUS are, either, RINOS, or “Big Conservative Republicans”?

I flatly reject your comment.

Gov. Rick Perry is the consistent conservative with the record, which places him in the best position to beat Obama.

I will not (in this post) comment on the others.

Of the six remaining GOP contenders:

Huntsman is nowhere

Both Paul and Santorum peaked in Iowa and will probably go downhill fast

Gingrich will be at Romney’s throat

Gee, who does THAT leave?

This chump, Perry, thinks the taxpayers of Texas should give ILLEGAL ALIENS ‘in state tuition’ rates. They’ve already broken the law, he wants taxpayers to subsidize them,. NEVER MIND that AMERICAN BORN students who live in other states would pay FULL WHACK!!!! He did this to pander to the Mexican illegal alien voters and gimme, gimme crowd.

The fact that he saw NOTHING wrong with this (among other things) stops him dead in his tracks in my book.
