Republicans aghast: Has Newt gone rogue?
SFGate: Politics Blog ^ | 1/4/12 | Carla Marinucci, Chronicle Political Writer

Former House Speaker Newton Leroy Gingrich, what happened — to Ronald Reagan’s 11th commandment, to that (fleeting) vow to “stay positive” in your GOP 2012 presidential campaign

Here’s Sacramento-based GOP consultant Rob Stutzman on Gingrich’s latest moves:
“Newt has put on a vest strapped with C4 and he’s running into the middle of New Hampshire to pull the ripcord. It’s a murder-suicide — because it don’t think he’ll grow his category there.”

Tough words, but Stutzman (always a great quote machine) isn’t alone in likening Gingrich to a dangerous character these days.

That’s because the former Speaker has wasted no time drop kicking the Reagan mantra (“thou shalt not speak ill of another Republican”) as soon as the Iowa caucus results were announced Tuesday — putting Mitt Romney in his sites in a way that, well, Democrats can only love.

Gingrich raked Romney as a “moderate Massachusetts Republican, to the left of the majority of Republicans,” who has “very limited appeal” to the party as a whole.

Ouch.

Newt better be careful, this could come back to bite him big. Lots of baggage could come out that he never dreamed would see the light of day from his colleagues back in the House circa 1990’s.

Newt didn't win Iowa after he gloated that he would be the Nominee. Now he's manipulating Santorum through flattery. I wouldn't doubt that Newt did Herman Cain in to gain ground.

The guy is a scoundrel in my books. I could never vote for him! He is not a conservative and he will never convince me that he is one!

Sad state of affairs but there seems to little doubt that the vast majority of Republicans are liberal in nature...

The conservatives in the primaries always come in towards the bottom with the most conservative being last...

Newt is correct. I am sure the Pubbies are distraught. We, conservatives, better coalesce around one or two candidates or we will get Mitt. Just the way we got McCain. Personally I think Newt is the best candidate. I could also support any pubbie candidate except Paul. Money where mouth is this weekend.

Where was all this concern for Reagan’s 11th commandment when Romney’s bots went out and trashed Newt?

What a totally perverted article.

I was less than 20 feet away from Newt Monday night when he stated that following Reagan’s commandment probably was a mistake and cost him a win in the Iowa caucus. (He said this the night before the caucus.)

And that’s EXACTLY what happened. Newt took the high road and ran a clean campaign. Romney spent more than $2 Million in the last two weeks on a very ugly attack and smear campaign.

Newt’s got every reason to be pissed and I hope he gets nastier than hell.

The 11th Commandment only applies to Republicans. Romney doesn't qualify.

Santorum canNOT win this; nor can he beat Obama (OK/IMHO). He has been dealt a 'bad hand' in that he looks like a 'choir boy'. Sucks; but he is 'sans gravitas'. . . Mitt, a close second. . .Santorum simply does not 'look' the part, of 'world leader'; no matter his detemination to be such.

Obama/Soros will eat him for dinner. . .and breakfast, lunch; as the case may be. Speaking of such; have to say; that the 'trail' has been good for Rick. He looks like he has gained a little 'weight'; which lends itself to his looking even a tiny bit, mature. Just not enough.

Wish him well; nonetheless. . .

See Mitt/Newt maybe Paul. . .as the big boys in this game. One, of course; bigger; wiser; smarter than them all.

We sure are hearing the wa-a-a-a-mbulances out there.

No, Reagan did not believe in attacking fellow Republicans.

He didn’t believe in unilateral disarmament, either.

But but . . . . wait a minute “they” told us voters don’t like negative ads or negative . . . BUT in the next breath out of the other side of their mouth they say THEY WORK . . . but now that Newt decides to tell the truth and defend himself, negative is bad. Say it ain’t so.

Baloney. They come in towards the bottom because they are either little known candidates or they have been totally trashed by the liberal elites.

If the vast majority of the primary voters were liberals, the candidates would all be spouting lib talk to get elected. Remember what killed Perry’s campaign, the perception that he was liberal on illegals. You see that practically everyone running claims to be conservative. Even a lib like Romney says he is a conservative businessman.

Liberal ideology does not win republican primaries, but all the libs pretending to be conservative crowd out the real conservatives running. Four years ago we fought tooth and nail right here warning people what a socialist Romney was. When you’ve got socialists with massive money and multiple media minions spreading lies about themselves and talking down real conservatives, then you get the result you mentioned — real conservatives always coming in towards the bottom.

If Newt has gone rogue he will pick up a lot of support. Most of the American middle class have already gone rogue.

I think you are on to something.
If Freddie Newt goes Medieval on Romulus, it will backfire.
I believe Santorum could benefit from the fight between Freddie Newt and Romulus.

Freddie Newt is polling at 9% in NH.
It is possible that Santorum could come in 2nd or 3rd in NH,
pushing the DC Hack of Freddie Mac into 4th...again

No one has ever heard of Santoram, everyone knows Romney is nothing but a homogenized Democrat. He is absolutely insipid, and could not beat anyone, he is just another done over like Dole McCain, Tomas Sowell said it better than any one, the only one that knows what is going on and knows how to organize and get us out of the financial mess we are in is Newt...Newt Newt.

I saw the Lincoln Douglas debate!

Newt is a shrewd, conniving politician.

Ask his first and second wives how honorable of a man he is!

Please don't be naive.

Newt Gingrich has behaved like a patriot in this campaign. From the earliest debates to Iowa, Gingrich attacked Obama, not the other GOP candidates. When a moderator used a question to trigger the candidates to attack each other, Gingrich lashed out at the moderator and defended each as a better choice than Obama. He has focused his campaign on defeating Obama and was simply making a much stronger argument against Obama than any of the others. That and his credentials are what put him on top.

Romney is stuck at 25% and only leads by splitting the conservatives. Rick Santorum worked a strong ground game and was beneficiary of the carpet bombing against Newt in Iowa. Newt set the positive tone and it was the actions of Romney and his big money establishment support that took him down, not anything special Santorum did. Having said that, if Santorum can stay strong and make his case as the anti-Romney, good for him. But one-on-one, Newt against Rick it is not a contest who is the stronger candidate who can take 0bama down. Gingrich without question.
