“Haley has lots of GOP enemies in SC and she has backed Mitt”

EXACTLY! I know Gov. Haley’s decision to back Romney was simply political payback for his endorsement of her 2010 campaign, but it was a gigantic mistake. Romney is NOT popular in the south and I can bet most South Carolina Republicans are not going to follow their Governor’s endorsement.

Gov. Perry really does have a chance to shine here. My mother is a southerner and one thing I have learned is that southerners really like to support and take care of fellow southerners and the fact that Gov. Perry is simply a southerner will help him immensely!

Perry has been quite strong in the last three debates. He has improved his performance in each one and is now equal to the task.

The biggest problem he has now is his idiotic "part-time congress" idea. I think that is a real mistake on his part.

Certainly Newt is sitting in the catbird's seat with a large lead in SC and in Fla., but I wouldn't count Perry out just yet. I'll be happy with any one of the three conservatives still in the race and we still have to see how Huntsman does in NH.

Huntsman isn't out of the hunt yet, but he is in a tough position. I would prefer him to Romney.

Mainly I just want to see Romney go down.

LOL!!! Santorum is the least likely of the four remaining reality candidates to win the nomination.

Romney must be uncorking the champagne right now. Very, very sad move by Perry. He spent a ton of money in friendly territory and got no traction, just a distant 5th place result. The guy is showing his cluelessness about campaigning on a national stage by thinking he has anything to gain by staying in. The only thing he could possibly gain is a V.P. slot under Romney. So you can thank him for helping bring us that ticket.

Perry lost this election the moment he told us we don’t have a heart. He needs to drop out so we can get behind Santorum or Gingrich.

Reword your post and replace ‘Perry’ with ‘Gingrich’ and ‘5th’ with ‘4th’.

What’s the difference other than one has executive experience, hasn’t spent decades in Washington, and wasn’t elected “Head Crony” by his peers?

Florida is winner-take-all no matter how low of a plurality the winner gets. If Newt and both Ricks are still in the race by then, it’s a guaranteed huge win for the Mitt column. Perry had his chance and the people have spoken loud and clear, they don’t want him. There isn’t any poll where he’s performing respectably at all. Perry is a guaranteed general-election loser even if he did somehow magically win. He’s a regional candidate with regional appeal, nothing more.

Newt is still the one conservative who can unite EVERY wing of the Republican party. He can play in the south and the north and he has national security, social and economic credentials and a record to back them up. The problem with Iowa is everyone was looking for the candidate who was 100% purist on SOME issue. It’s impossible for Newt to look 100% perfect on anything with 40 years of votes and interviews to dissect, but he is very strong in any single category. Perry can’t win in northern swing states and Santorum is weak on economic policy and a big-spending pork barrel “compassionate conservative.”

Congress worked fantastically under Newt. He got more conservative results under a Democratic president then the next Congresses did under Bush. You can’t blame him because they fell off the cliff right after he left in 1999.

Newt has proven he is fearless and will take on the Washington establishment in or out of his party. Everything he did in Washington was great so how can you hold his Washington experience against him? A new person could go in there and become tainted. Newt has already proven he won’t.

I’m not saying Perry is a bad governor but he’s been in this contest long enough and hasn’t performed. He’s shown he is very unprepared for a national or competitive campaign. His polls in northern states are particularly poor but he’s not polling well anywhere.

If that was a one-time gaffe he might have recovered. But then came “oops,” not to mention that weird ad about gays in the military and prayer in school that came off as comical pandering to the religious right.

If Perry gets out after SC then he won’t have done too much damage. If he stays in through FL, then Mitt will probably win FL and become unstoppable.

Since Mitt held onto all his votes in IA, we can assume he will in FL too, which puts him at 31%. If 3 conservatives split the rest of the FL vote, they get 23% each and all lose. With only 2 conservatives, an even split would give them 34% each, enough to beat Mitt.

FL 2008:
McCain 36%
Romney 31.03%
Giuliani 14.68%

A friend from high school is now a conservative GOP member of the SC Statehouse and he recently sent me a picture of he and his family with Perry. He told me Perry is doing a lot of behind the scenes work to shore up support from sitting reps with great success. He said that in person he is miles away from his bumbling, TV image.

I don’t understand you desire for Romney to take down newt for the little chance that it might help Perry...if at all. When is it okay to hope Romney a real liberal bring down the conservative wing?

Hopefully, Mittens will see that and re-educate them on Newt’s failings and baggage allowing Perry some room.

Why are you hoping that Willard helps the MSM in bringing down a Conservative?

The goal is to bring Willard down and bring Obama down, not cheer Willard trying to bring a Conservative down.

“Everything he did in Washington was great so how can you hold his Washington experience against him? A new person could go in there and become tainted. Newt has already proven he won’t.”

I’m not sure who you are talking about. There must be two Newt Gingrichs in the race because the one who was Speaker of the House in the 1990’s is nothing like the one you describe.

If my choices are Gingrich or Romney on Super Tuesday I’ll get falling down drunk, be carried into the polling place and vote for Gingrich with a bucket under my chin. I’m still hoping for a better option.

My, that was a fast “3 day trip to Texas to reassess the campaign.”

Are you sure about this?

Some good news though, Bobby Jindal has endorsed and campaigned for R. Perry! I hope some more governors will too!

The only think loser Perry is doing is taking votes away from Santorum who will ultimately give the win to Romney

You are correct there! And I actually like Perry. I even supported him until the "you have no heart statement". I still like the man but at this point I agree with you... he's only helping Romney at this point.

I don’t think Newt cares about the Presidency as much now. He’s staying in to get Romney. I think he’s about to tag team with Santorum. I would not be surprised to see a Santorum/Newt ticket if either Santorum or Newt win the nomination.

Why? He’s only been in one race so far! Even Fred Thompson didn’t leave the race in 2008 until about 3 or 4 races were done!

I sure hope so. I really want to see Perry make a comeback.

I don't know why he's been getting hammered relentlessly on this conservative forum. Perry is strong on job creation, government deregulation, pro-life and pro-2nd Amendment. And he has a record to back it up. Additionally, he doesn't have a closet full of skeletons. He's been thoroughly vetted by Austin liberals who have spent a decade failing to dig up dirt on him. Yet all we hear are "Gardasil" and "La Raza Ricardo". And somehow Santorum and Gingrich are the "conservatives" in this race?

So Perry can't debate. So what? Gingrich will carve Obama up in a debate and then get his ass handed to him in the general election! Is this what we want? And Santorum? Take away his pro-life accolades and he's just another big-spending Republican.

This election is going to be about jobs and the economy --something that Perry has dealt with successfully and has a record to prove it. He can beat Obama.
