LOS ANGELES (AP) -- A State Department official says a German man was identified as a suspect in the Los Angeles arson spree because his mother was the subject of a provisional arrest request by Germany.
Speaking on condition of anonymity because the investigations are ongoing, the official told The Associated Press Tuesday that authorities learned about Harry Burkhart while working on the mother's case and recognized him in security video of the arson suspect.
"When they saw the security footage, they recognized him and they contacted the arson task force," the official said.
The official said the footage was seen on Sunday and Los Angeles authorities were alerted immediately. Burkhart was picked up on Monday, the official said.
The official didn't know the status of Burkhart's mother, Dorothee, or what type of visas the pair had entered the country on. As German citizens, they would be eligible to come to the U.S. without a visa for 90 days under the Visa Waiver Program.
A federal law enforcement official, speaking on condition of anonymity because the official was not authorized to discuss the case, said Harry Burkhart was present when his mother was arrested Dec. 28 by deputy U.S. marshals and Los Angeles police on the provisional arrest warrant.
It's no known why Germany sought the mother.

So Obama’s gonna try to take credit for this just like with bin Laden.
Next he’ll claim he personally ordered the weather to freeze that guy on Mt Ranier.
Hmmmmm
I find it interesting Burkhart carried travel papers from Chechnya. Just sayin’...
It’s no known why...
???
Also, this one sentence-per-paragraph style seems to be appearing more and more.
Are there no writing standards left for so-called journalists?
So much space to fill.
So few words.
Even fewer “facts.
Makes reporting even more difficult.
To make a living.
Or not.
The feds got involved early on in the case, which covered 4 nights and days. It’s not hard to get them involved quickly, since they are already here, lol. There were at least 6 jurisdictions involved: L.A. City Police and Fire, L.A. County Sheriff and Fire, ATF and DHS. Oh, I guess ICE is involved too.
I consider most of what I am hearing to be rumor until we get some semi-hard facts.
IS that true? That is very interesting, I agree.
You
may have
a
point there.
What’s so unusual about Chechnya?
Burkhart hated America. Had a very nasty outburst in court room when his Mother was facing a deportation hearing.
His presence in Chechnya concerns me. How long was he there? Was he merely "sight-seeing?" How many go to Chechnya for that? Many people from Chechnya are fighting our troops in 'Stan and have fought them in Iraq. Chechnya is a known exporter of Islamic fighters. Training schools for such have been set up there.
Again, much of this is just curiosity on my part, but I'm sure that I am not the only one interested in Burkharts "visit" to Chechnya...
Plus, how many of these guys are here? The damage a single ‘German’ did was estimated to be $60MM, IIRC. Imagine 100 of these guys.
He wasn’t caught because of good police work, but sheer luck.
Don't know about you, but I live in the L.A. area and followed this story closely from the first incident to the present moment. Burkhart was caught because of VERY GOOD police work and all the agencies involved working together in a task force. I'll bet you can't even tell me the name of the individual who apprehended Burkhart and called for backup to make the arrest.... I'll bet.
Also, damages are estimated at $3 million, way off your $60 million. Try waiting to become informed before you post.
You’re right, but what’s $57 million between FRiends? ;-]
