"The illegals I met last night."
Self | 1/1/2012 | Bern Pearson

Posted on 01/01/2012 8:10:22 AM PST by Gen.Blather

I met some illegal Mexicans last night at a party. Several years ago I stayed with a couple of wonderful Mexican families in the Baja below California. These were well-off people. The homes, on average were beautifully tiled and some of them had mahogany inlaid walls, bookshelves and cabinetry that would cost a hundred-thousand dollars here. So, I’m guessing if they aren’t rich they’re very comfortable. The elderly not as well-off grandfather, while living in Mexico was receiving Social Security from the United States and owned a rent-free apartment in California which he used as his address to receive several forms of assistance checks from Californian agencies. He visited the apartment once a week to re-arrange things and make it looked lived in. He had a car, a Toyota Corolla that looked quite nice and had working air-conditioning. I gathered it was supplied as some form of assistance and he generally left it in California at the apartment. The apartment was about 1100 square feet and very livable. The grandfather told me most of entire complex, easily a 1000 units, were like him, on Californian assistance, but actually living in Mexico.

At the party were a couple of teenage boys from this family. Very nice kids. I’d be proud to have them as my own; diligent, hard working, trouble-free and much more adult than you’d expect from that age. They told me that they’d decided to go to high school in California instead of Mexico. They said that the (California) government gave them an apartment and they travel back to Mexico on the weekends. (I don’t know if they’re staying alone or if a family member is staying with them, but if I had to guess, they came alone.)

When I posted information on this family last time, Freepers angrily asked why I hadn’t reported them. Firstly, I was a well-treated guest. Secondly, this must be obvious to the casual observer. Even if I knew who to report it to in California, which I don’t, it is obvious that this is how it’s done. These people are only taking advantage of “benefits” put there for them. Not to avail themselves of these benefits would be like deciding not to take candy freely offered to you.

Yes, six. I’ve put cake mix on a list with some other things DP can get at Walmart.

Vlad's birthday?

Things are hectic here, but I'll have my assistant contact the Fardeaux triplets to see if there's anything they can do . . .

[Get your minds out of the gutter, folks; the Fardeaux triplets are award-winning cinematographers who occasionally star in their own films.]

Major faux pas. My assistant says they’re the Ferdus triplets. Glad I didn’t place the call.

Unfortunately my schedule and that of the Ferdus triplets does not mesh today. They will have to delay their appearance on the UT.

Please wish Vlad a happy birthday and smother him with motherly smotherings of whatever sort are appropriate.

But not the kind they make Lifetime channel movies about.

if you worked in CA and earned a pension as part of your employment agreement, whether you retired in CA or not, they still taxed your pension,

They tried to do that to the military stationed in California. They wanted to tax your retirement pro-rated to the amount of time you were stationed there.

The DOD, in a rare moment of sanity, told them to get bent.

Hi, everybody!

Just poking my head in for a moment to wish Vlad a happy birthday!

I’m at JFK, heading off to Egypt with my mom for a 2 week trip. Will somebody water the Green Leafy Things while I’m gone?

Back soon! Don’t trash the place (any more than usual.)

Safe journey!

The Green Leafy Things are in suspended animation until your return, requiring minimal care.

*hug*

Howdy!! 2 more inches of snow overnight... up to 52 inches..YET great news...I have noticed these past few weeks when outside snow blowing I could hear birds singing (which has always been weird to hear when it is all out snowing)

I used to feed mt chickadee’s here. They left my area when we went on vacation last year.....well yesterday afternoon I put peanut butter in the feeder!!! Guess what is eating peanut butter today? they are back.. I just love to watch them.

Hopefully they will feed now and stick around. Have a nice safe day y’all!!!!

Meh. Don’t get me started. LOL!

(I need to get a new chair for my computer. I can’t adjust the height on this one, so I’m typing under my chins.)

Break a leg at your interview! Is it for an ice cream maker? (I can hope, can’t I?)

Hiya!

There were always two birds I looked for as a kid: the chickadee and the robin. We don’t get either one, here. Mostly pigeons, sparrows and mockingbirds. Once in a while, we will see hummingbirds, but I keep resisting putting up a feeder, hoping to move into a larger place.

Sorry about your chair. No ice cream but it is a dairy so milk.

I would be working for the competition of my former employer. :) I LIKE that idea. It is a much smaller company as it is a independent local as opposed to the Mega-Corp I used to work for but that means that when the CEO is implementing something that will add more work, cost more and do not a lick of good I have a chance, albeit a small one, of being regarded as a problem solver rather then a problem maker.

A pileated woodpecker has moved in here this winter.

I always look for the Robin’s....that means snow will be gone soon! We had a nest in the carport last year..yet to busy for them so they moved. Yet do get to see the nests and babies sometimes in other places around town. 2 years ago got photos of babies getting fed.

We get those here during spring/summer. I love them yet some neighbors kill them saying they harm the homes? Yet we have the pine beetle up here and places that do not kill the woodpeckers seem to have less beetle killed trees.
