The Minnesota Republican Party's debts total about $2 million, including more than $700,000 in contested legal fees from the 2010 gubernatorial recount.
The party's financial troubles were no secret, but an internal review released Friday detailed the extent of the problems. It shows the party has obligations totaling $1.3 million over and above the legal fees, including $415,000 that hadn't been reported before and $120,000 in Federal Election Commission fines.
"The debt number is higher than anyone wants it to be," said Jeff Johnson, chairman of the party's executive committee and a Hennepin County commissioner. "There's some pretty ugly stuff in here."
Later Friday, party secretary-treasurer David Sturrock resigned, saying he needed to step aside to allow new leadership to make a fresh start.
Meanwhile, party leaders said they're working with election officials to correct campaign finance reports dating back to 2009, which could result in fines at the state and federal levels.
"Our intent is we're going to fix whatever we need to fix," Johnson said.

Politicians sure do know how to spend other people’s money.
It’s Michele Bachmann’s fault, and both Bush’s fault, and Ronald Reagan’s fault,.../s
Yeah...that damn Bachmann. LOL!
That’s not so much. It only pays for half of an Obama vacation.
Well, to match the GOP majority in the House, there is the first GOP-controlled Senate since 1974. With both houses in the GOP column, Gov. Dayton was powerless to stop a 2012 vote on the marriage amendment.
hopefully we can keep the house and senate.
Any news on who is running against amy k?
Shes up this year and needs da boot. Wonder if Rod Grams is willing...
A well timed article, no accident, released by Republicans no less, prior to their vote for a new party chairman in MN. Probably political shenanigans to maybe advance one contender over another for the chairmanship by getting the voters in a snit. Sometimes chaos creates a crease for a creep to run through. Alinsky?
Otherwise, ole Amy Kloucbutcher (D), may become a shoe-in for a second term, since the Republicans at finance seem to be showing their ineptness and disarray.
Control of the MN legislature?
“Yuh. What do they have to show for their 2 million dollar debt.”
Senator Franken?
And Gov Dayton
This the same group of babosos who allowed alfranken to steel an election?
Hange em.
I backed Dave Thompson over that bastard “Fat Tony” Sutton for the Republican Party chairman’s seat.
Guess I was right, again.
I am thrilled that Dave is now my state Senator.

Hmm, this must be the reason why I had to ask them to remove me from their call list. They call all the time.
