Reports of illnesses in dogs given chicken jerky treats have spiked dramatically following a new government warning about pet snacThe federal Food and Drug Administration has logged at least 353 reports this year of illnesses tied to imported chicken jerky products, also sold as chicken tenders, chicken strips or chicken treats, a spokeswoman said.
Thats up from 70 reports of illnesses -- and some deaths -- received in 2011 before the Center for Veterinary Medicine issued an updated warning on Nov. 18.
Dog owners and veterinarians are reporting that animals have been stricken with a range of symptoms within hours or days of eating chicken jerky, including serious problems such as kidney failure and Fanconi syndrome, a condition marked by low blood sugar.
Though the illnesses appear tied to chicken jerky products manufactured in China, the source of the problem remains a mystery, said Siobhan DeLancey, an FDA spokeswoman.ks made in China.

“Though the illnesses appear tied to chicken jerky products manufactured in China”
Well, imagine that. /sarc.
“FDA officials are warning pet owners to avoid chicken jerky treats imported from China.”
What pet owner in their right mind would purchase Chinese made food products for their dog or cat?? That or Old Roy from Walmart.
What is the darn issue with the Chinese killing our dogs. I can’t remember the number but we had so many sick and dying dogs from the last “incident”. I think there were a number of FReepers who lost their beloved pets.
Hmm ... poison food from the land of quality fade. Who would have guessed? Wonder if its melamine, ant-freeze, chromium, lead ???
That stuff must be really bad. A dog’s digestive system can handle about anything.
I had a throw away dog which just showed up here. She was about to have pups. She was a very good dog and had 8 really pretty pups.
One day I noticed all the pups gone. I followed her and found she had brought them all to a rotting deer carcass. They were all feeding off that. It didn’t seem to harm any of them.
Ewwww.
LOL! She was probably feeling a little pulled down from all that nursing. Get those kids onto the solid (well, semi-solid anyhow) food!
I don’t want to belittle the significance of this warning only to point out that this info has been known for at least a couple of years, maybe more. I can remember finding this out about that long ago and immediately tossing that crap I had bought at Costco. In my observation my dog would end up drinking a ton of water after eating those things. Fortunately, it never went beyond that in my case.
Imagine the kind of chicken the Chinese think is fit only for dogs.
We lost our dog Heidi due to the tainted Chinese dog food scandal 3 years ago.
Yep. Another victory for “free trade.”
I am so sorry about your Heidi, MoochPooch. My SIL is a vet and she tried to treat quite a few of them. Many times, she simply had to put them to sleep. Those were some very rough and scary times for doggie owners.
Rule number one:
If its from China its crap, if its food from China it was crap to begin with.
If this is being read by someone actually in China I have some sympathy for you, not enough rice or girls and you are probably being paid a handful of rice to hack anything in America. Take it, America surrenders! Just come on over and take over, you might do a better job!
Human food and pet food - you have to read the labels.
Trust no food that has Chinese ingredients.
They do not care if you get sick or die!
Was that in the summer? Cause you know those maggots are pure protein.
No, it was in the Winter and I probably was a bit too far in describing the deer carcass as rotting. It wasn’t quite that far gone but was beginning to smell.
