DENVER Starting Jan. 1, getting shark fins, caffeinated beer, cough syrup or a tan is going to be tougher than it was in 2011.
The National Conference of State Legislatures issued Monday its annual list of laws set to take effect in 2012, and there was nothing but bad news for connoisseurs of shark-fin soup. Oregon and California passed laws prohibiting the sale, trade, or distribution of the fins, which are considered a delicacy in China.
California also became the first state in the nation to require a prescription for obtaining any drug containing dextromethorphan, an ingredient found in many popular over-the-counter cough suppressants, including Robitussin, NyQuil and Dimetapp.
The law was prompted by a spike in the use of cough syrup as a recreational drug. A Food and Drug Administration advisory panel considered making the medications prescription-only, but rejected the idea in September.
Voter identification continued to be a hot topic for legislators in 2011. Four states Kansas, Rhode Island, Tennessee and Texas approved laws requiring voters to present photo identification before casting ballots.
A fifth state, South Carolina, had passed its own voter-identification law, but it was overturned Dec. 23 by the Justice Department. South Carolina is required to submit revisions in voting procedures for federal clearance as a state with a history of discrimination at the ballot box, but it can appeal Justices ruling in federal court.
Supporters say the laws are needed to combat voter fraud, but the effort has touched off an outcry among civil rights groups, which contend that the laws are aimed at suppressing minority-voter participation. The NAACP recently launched a campaign, Stand for Freedom, to fight voter-identification measures.

My belief in our ability to keep our country, by simply voting with a ballot is fading with each passing day.

I always check anymore to see if someone has already answered a post and you did. I think to throw away the rest of a shark besides the fin would be similar to slaughtering a cow because you like beef liver and then throw away the rest of it.

I am a CDL driver. Just today I was briefed by my dispatcher on the new federal regulation regarding commercial vehicle drivers using hand held phones while driving. $2750 fine for the driver, and $11,000 fine for the company.
Now, folks are free to agree or disagree with this regulation that was put into place by unelected bureaucrats. But the regulation specifically states that it does not apply to any GOVERNMENT vehicle... local, state, or federal.
It only applies to us "little people, who don't work for the government... just like in the U.S.S.R.

And what exact part of the Constitution gives the Federal government that control?
It's a shaky bridge the feds are walking on, trying to bump revenues.

This is no longer a DEM vs GOP issue. There are as many Nanny State Lawmakers in the GOP now as there are in the DEMs. The more they control the more out of hand things are getting including prescription medication.
It's going to take putting pressure on the elected to either stop or be voted out next election. In this day and time there is no reason anyone should have to get a prescription for cold medications that were OTC till a few short years ago.
I stated this on another thread and I'll state it on this one. The government can't even stop the flow in and out of it's own so called secured prison systems.
Every new "WAR" the government declares on something means less and less rights and freedoms for all especially the innocent. Problems like METH Labs are a direct result of the War On Drugs. These idiots are going to get it one way or another. Make it available to them made in a safe place under safe conditions so the rest of us can get our cold meds or whatever and not have to worry about Bubba with two functioning brain cells making METH next door or in his vehicle.
This has too end at some point and a sense of sanity restored in our government. If our elected from state lawmakers, sheriffs, etc to congress, judges, etc were forced to live their day too day lives under the very laws they create for us then it would stop.
BTW as for cell phone while driving? The biggest users I've seen are Cops. Of course other laws including speed limits going to roll call in their provided vehicle do not apply too them either.

Agreed. No doubt many Freepers will attack you because it’s liberals pushing for the ban. But, seriously....there are some things that just aren’t right, and it doesn’t make me an envirowacko.

I know for a fact (having been to asia) that not everyone adheres to our standards. But if I catch a shark. I will make sharkfin soup. And eat the steaks,
My observation is that poor folks in that part of the world don't waste meat.
