Missing $4,155? It Went Into Your Gas Tank This Year
cnbc.com ^ | 12.19.2011 | AP

It's been 30 years since gasoline took such a big bite out of the family budget.

When the gifts from Grandma are unloaded and holiday travel is over, the typical American household will have spent $4,155 filling up this year, a record. That is 8.4 percent of what the median family takes in, the highest share since 1981.

Gas averaged more than $3.50 a gallon this year, another unfortunate record. And next year isn't likely to bring relief.

In the past, high gas prices in the United States have gone hand-in-hand with economic good times, making them less damaging to family finances. Now prices are high despite slow economic growth and weak demand.

That's because demand for crude oil is rising globally, especially in the developing nations of Asia and Latin America. But it puts the squeeze on the U.S., where unemployment is high and many people who have jobs aren't getting raises.

Demand for oil has has actually went down world wide due to the slow down in the economy.

The high price of oil in the US has more to do with the Obama energy policies that are targeting 7 dollar per gallon oil prices as a desirable goal

About 5000 miles at 25 miles to a gallon, so 200 gallons times $3.50, that $700.

Now parking.....12 months at $308 a month, that’s $3660.

you’ll still get to pay for choo-choos and bike paths for the cockroaches who don’t mind being cockroaches as long as it’s paid for their cockroach lifestyle.

I’m so thankful that my husband and I have both finished night school. We were both working full time and going to school every night for 4 and 5 years. Our gasoline each month was about $600 back then (only a few years ago), when gas was in the $2/gal range. I cannot imagine how we would pay for the prices now.

Now, I work from home at least one day per week, and my husband works from home every day. It’s a huge relief. There are a lot of shopping places I don’t drive to because of the cost of driving there. I just shop online instead.

It would be nice to see their methodology. $4k in a year seems high, but then again I don't have to drive very far every day. And that means I get to drive my giant, gas-guzzling SUV with a only marginal penalty for gas consumption. I probably spend about $1500 annually on gas (one vehicle). Obviously, multiple vehicle households will be spending a lot more.

Interestingly, overall consumption has remained relatively constant over the past several decades, which leads me to believe that (media saturation notwithstanding), price fluctuations don't really influence behavior at the macro level. And this makes sense. Most of our driving is done out of necessity (commute, grocery shopping, etc.). We may forego that extra drive to grandma's this year, but that's just a drop in the proverbial bucket.

The real price of fuel is about half of what it is. The other half is worry about prices caused by EPA and environmental activists. These people are picking your pockets and you don’t even know it.

Wake up people.

Yup.

I’d rather have America’s congested roads, one-hour commutes, and suburban homes with picket fences than live in a 45-story cattle car in Seoul.

5000 miles annual is abnormally low. 15-20k is average. 30k+ is high.

“Now prices are high despite slow economic growth and weak demand. “

Reminding again, the Govt. Market, loaded with government pensions/retirements, follows the price of oil.

Note, oil is up today over 3.00, and what do know, the “market” up over 300pts.

All the Cain-ite fed jobs are additionally putting continued price pressure on essentials.

Cash out = pay more.
