Saudi King Calls for Arab Super State

King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia formally called for the formation of a Gulf Union on a backdrop of regional unrest and growing tensions with rival Iran.

"I ask today that we move from a phase of cooperation to a phase of union within a single entity," Abdullah said during his address at the opening session of the six-member Gulf Cooperation Council conference in Riyadh.

"You must realise that our security and stability are threatened and we need to live up to our responsibilities," said King Abdullah.

"Our summit opens in the shadow of challenges that require vigilance and a united stance," he added.

The GCC -- comprised of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman and the United Arab Emirates -- was formed in 1981 as a security alliance to counter post-revolution Iran.

While Abdullah did not speak directly to the nature such a union might take, the six-member GCC has been openly discussing transforming their alliance into a unified diplomatic and military confederation for months now.

It has also been actively moving to expand its ranks. The GCC opened integration negotiations with Jordan earlier this month, and is engaged in exploratory talks with Morocco.

Don't hold your breath. They've been talking about unity since the fall of the Ottoman empire. It's like nailing jelly to a wall.

Super State? The only thing they know how to sell are dates and suicide belts. They needed U.S. and Brit know-how just to get their own freakin’ oil out of the ground. When we trash Obama and open our oil spigots, the House of Saud will fall like a ton of bricks.

Sorry king, you’re a day late and a dollar short.

Iran beat you to it, only they’re not telegraphing the world the way you wanted to.

In the end, Iran wins. You lose. We lose.

Not a good thing.

I wonder at what point, as they move towards unity, they start killing each other. It’s like watching the EU form and dissolve in fast forward, except for that part.

I would think a Saudi King would be more worried about becoming the next Gaddafi, rather than this fantasy.

The birth of Muhammad's empire also coincided with the deaths of huge numbers of infidels. Never underestimate the power of unrestrained violence in building and holding an empire together. And then there's the danger of a single Muslim empire controlling the majority of the planet's oil.

Well, it’ll keep them busy and waste lots of their money. So it’s a good thing.

But Muhammed’s empire originally succeeded because the Arab tribes were too busy fighting each other to stop him. Later, it fell apart because they were too busy fighting each other. Arabs believe they have dual ancestry. Those of Yemen consider themselves superior to the Qys or Northern Arabs, because their earliest ancestor is believed to be a son of Eber. Those of Qys are mere descendants of Ishmael. The two groups will not intermarry. As Islam spread, so did this duality claim. Even in Mideival Spain, Northern and Southern “Arabs” were constantly feuding.

The goal is to kill Iranians and push the Sunni version of Islam. They won't kill each other off until they finish with the Persians/Shiites.

Wahabism was the principal source of the islamist terror on 9/11. I still think we should take these saudis down and be running their oil show for ourselves.

There was a UNITED ARAB REPUBLIC composed of Egypt and Syria back in the early 1960s. I don’t know if Jordan was in on that. It lasted about long enough to print some postage stamps.

Egypt kept the name, though, and attacked Israel as the UAR in 1967. Here we go again.
