Egyptian security forces fought opponents of army rule in Cairo for a fourth day on Monday and the United States, worried by the violence, urged the generals to respect human rights.

Medical sources said the death toll had risen to 13 since Friday. Hundreds have been wounded and scores detained.

Police and soldiers using batons and tear gas drove stone-throwing protesters out of Cairo's Tahrir Square, hub of the uprising that ousted Hosni Mubarak in February, overnight.

Hundreds had returned to the square by morning after security forces retreated behind barricades in streets leading to parliament, the cabinet office and the Interior Ministry.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon condemned the "excessive" force used against the demonstrations that have widened a rift among Egyptians over the role of the army and cast a shadow over the country's first free election in decades.

Human rights watchdog Amnesty International called on arms suppliers to stop sending small arms and ammunition to Egypt's military and security forces in the wake of the violent crackdown on protesters. …

The leftists in charge of the US are only worried now? Sounds like they're just worried about egg on their face for supporting this travesty. Never mind the other usual suspects among the international gang of hypocrites . . .

If two hundred thousand people marched on the White House, I wonder how quickly mObama would demand the police and the national guard allow the protesters to do anything they wanted.

What if those protesters tried to occupy the SCOTUS, or the Congressional building? What if they were rushing our military bases?

Would our leaders demand the police and national guard stand down?

We are making preposterous demands on foreign governments.

No, everything this government has done is not perfect. Neither will everything the next government does, let me guarantee you.

This is very similar to the overthrow of the Shah of Iran in the 1970s. He was cracking down on the Muslim extremists and the US and world media creamed him for it. Jimmy Carter was instrumental in his overthrow and wouldn’t even allow him in the US for medical treatment. Then the ayatollahs took over and we have what we have there now.

Mubarak in Egypt was similar to the Shah. Now Obama is clearing the path for a Muslim extremists takeover in Egypt.

Your parallel is apt, and the outcome will likely be the same. The media convinced a casually interested public that the Shah was an evil man, and that his downfall was progress. No one in the US cared all that much until the hostages were taken.

My point is, the media will underplay this development and the average idiot will not notice as long as the Egyptians don't take a bunch of Americans hostage. After-all, they gang-raped a woman correspondent and not one voice was raised by the media in protest.

I don’t think you’re on the right website; try a pacifist libertarian one. If the previous president failed at anything, it was being too liberal and allowing the Twelvers to take power via elections, as well as not being hawkish enough and using both Iraq and Afghanistan as a staging ground to deal with Iran once and for all.

Ask who nicely?

The Egyptian military is using metal pipes, tear gas and other stuff. While supporting the "elected" radicals that got in due to intimidation and fraud.
