NEW YORK -- Witnesses say a fourth-grade boy choked on meatballs during lunch in a New York City school cafeteria this month and later died.

The New York Post reports that 9-year-old Jonathan Jewth fell to the ground during lunch Dec. 5 and was unconscious before help arrived. They say cafeteria workers at Public School 47 in the Bronx didn't know what to do and failed to help him.

"I saw the boy start choking, but nobody was helping," Andrea Perez, 25, told the New York Post.

A lemon is a soft-shelled sea slug. I think he meant stood there like slugs.

Staff stretched too thin. Need more. Need more grief counselors too. Need teflon additive to school lunches to prevent food sticking. Grants for research needed.

A. Demand that school staff be trained in the Heimlich Maneuver or

B. Call for a ban on meatballs.

I’m betting on B.

Most likely, C and/or D...

C. New legislation demanding that, all meatballs be made the size of peas to prevent choking.

D. All cafeteria food must be mashed or ground up before being fed to students.

Ban Meatballs. The Workers probably didn't want to be sued or fired.
It's most likely what it has come down to. Think about it, NY had to pass
a good samaritan law to force people into being sued.

It is OUTRAGEOUS that, in thi day and age, NONE of the cafetera staff knew the Heimlich manuever and, apparently (although not stated) NONE of the teachers appeared to know to maneuver or stepped in to help the boy!!

This is inexcusable!!

If you read the article, the Dept of Ed report says a parent and an assistant principal attempted the Heimlich maneuver before the boy passed out, and kept trying to revive him until EMS got there, which account differs from the cafeteria worker’s story.

My local paper had just had an article about a teacher who survived choking, but the people who helped her didn’t really know what to do - she lucked out.

All the health curriculum mandates there are - you should teach children and adults a few basic emergency responses: Heimlich, how to stop bleeding, how to call 911.

They work in a cafeteria and didn’t know the Heimlich maneuver?

If this were San Francisco, you could rest assured that EVERYONE would know how to do the Hindlick Maneuver.

Good grief. Are there not still signs up in cafeterias demonstrating the Heimlich Maneuver for them to follow? I think this should be mandatory training for their cafeteria staff.

“Mayor Bloomberg will:

A. Demand that school staff be trained in the Heimlich Maneuver or

B. Call for a ban on meatballs.

I’m betting on B.”

or

C. Schedule a remedial viewing of “Mrs. Doubtfire” for all cafeteria workers and all teachers.
