Gingrich wins Tea Party Patriots straw poll

Newt Gingrich might have dropped to third in Iowa — and he and Romney might be neck-and-neck in the latest CNN poll, but, among thousands of Tea Party activists from across the country, Gingrich retains a clear lead.

Tea Party Patriots — the nation’s largest Tea Party organization — last night hosted a Presidential Tele Forum with Mitt Romney, Michele Bachmann, Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum. (The other candidates were invited to participate, but declined because of scheduling conflicts, said Jenny Beth Martin, the co-founder and national coordinator of Tea Party Patriots.) Each candidate had 10 minutes to respond to questions from local Tea Party coordinators. After the question-and-answer portion, the call organizers asked listeners to vote for one candidate as their preferred nominee.

About 23,000 Tea Party activists joined the call and a significant portion of them voted in the straw poll, according to a news release. Of those who voted, 31 percent selected Newt Gingrich as their No. 1, 28 percent selected Michele Bachmann, 20 percent selected Mitt Romney and 16 percent selected Rick Santorum. The three non-participating candidates polled very poorly: Ron Paul garnered 3 percent of the vote, Rick Perry 2 percent and Jon Huntsman 0.3 percent.

The importance?

“The importance?”

Hopefully a solid base of support for Newt in order to stop the RINOs and Mitt. For what ever reason Rick and Michelle can’t even lead in their own states. I haven not seen anything on how Rick Perry is doing in Texas.

IMO, the importance is that he clearly demonstrates a good way to damage a grass roots movement.

If the Tea Party is going to do the RNC’s work for them, it’s a real problem.

You people Tea Partyers, why do you rank Santorum below Romney and Gingrich?

Probably because Tea Party activists do not see whining as a leadership trait.

Pragmatism. Vote for the most viable conservative you get elected. Santorum may be conservative, but he's not viable nationally.

Because Santorum is worthless, annoying and is not going anywhere. Though a solid conservative, he supported his senate buddy Specter, the most odious man in the senate at the time (at least on the republican side). I find myself fast forwarding past him to somebody else, somebody worth listening to.

Everyone is acting like Newt is out of it now. He’s not out of it. Polls are easy because it’s not your actual VOTE. When it comes time to actually cast it, no turning back, we’ll see if some of these “paul” supporters really give him their vote.

So Romney is pragmatic and does not whine on his flip-flops to allow him to vault over Santorum. He canvassed for Specter only after getting his assurance that he’d push conservative judges as Chair of the Senate Judicary Committee. More importantly if Santorum gets the favorite son vote in PA and carries the state, it’s curtains for Obama. Oh, and then there’s that small thing called the Catholic vote. The Tea Partyers don’t seem to get the message: “Its The Culture Stupid”!

The establishment “country club” republicans are doing their best to sabotage Gingrich to make him seem unpalatable to the true conservatives (particularly fiscal conservatives). This tells me more than anything else that I want to support him even more than I did before.

The Republican establishment appears to be making inroads into various Tea Party groups.

Remember, politicians can be VERY slick.

There are NO representatives of the real TEA Party movement... and anyone claiming that they speak for the movement is a liar. They only speak for themselves and those they surround themselves with.
