Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich enjoys a home-field advantage in the race for the Georgia presidential primary, but he trails Mitt Romney in head-to-head matchups with President Barack Obama, a new poll shows.
Gingrich, a former Georgia congressman, leads Romney 43 percent to 21 percent among Georgia Republicans, according to the poll by Mason-Dixon Polling & Research for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and the Georgia Newspaper Partnership. No other candidate drew double-digit support.
The poll shows Republican voters continue to express concern over the state of the economy as the March 6 presidential primary draws closer. Nearly half of all respondents said jobs and the economy will be the key issues in choosing a candidate.
Gingrich has become the campaigns front-runner nationally, and the Georgia results match polls in early-voting states such as Iowa and South Carolina where Gingrich also leads.
In addition to polling Republicans, Mason-Dixon also posed a pair of questions to a broader sample of general election voters. The results show that Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, is the stronger general election candidate.
Both Romney and Gingrich are favored in matchups with Obama. But Romneys lead is bigger. In a Gingrich-Obama matchup, Gingrich is favored 50 percent to 41 percent, with 9 percent undecided. In a Romney-Obama matchup, Romney gets 55 percent support to Obamas 38 percent, with 7 percent undecided.

Where is the Mr. Obvious picture. He better. I mean if you can’t win your own state than you should drop out. Perry can’t win Texas and should drop out but he is being stubborn.
I hope that Georgians will consider voting for someone who was actually born in the South, rather than vote for Gingrich.
Ping!
“Where is the Mr. Obvious picture. He better. I mean if you cant win your own state than you should drop out.”
Last I saw Rick Santorum was running 3rd in Pennsylvania behind Newt and Mitt.
Yes, because that's what it's all about. Regional parochialism.
Why stop there? Let's only vote for a candidate born in our state, no, better yet, our town.
Of course he should be of the exact same religion as us. Just to be sure, he should attend our local church.
That's the ticket.
how about voting for someone who actually lived. went to school and represented people from Georgia.. oh wait that’s Gingrich
The last poll I saw in Minnesota Mitt Romney was leading with Michelle a distant 3rd. I do not know what the latest trend is.
Well romneys’ dad was born in mexico. Is that south enough for ya?
I would take you seriously, but I just can’t, based on your remarks.
I was thinking ‘Virginia’.
I, too ,am a Cain supporter and will remain so.
George W. Bush, for six years, was governor a southern state, Texas.
He was born in a northern, yankee state, Connecticut.
Is it possible he won two Presidential elections because only northerners voted for him?
Newt’s GA campaign manager is Governor Nathan Deal. GA will go Gingrich. It won’t even be close.
I guess that explains why he carried Connecticut twice. Oh wait, . . .
Keep believing it, sucker...
The rest of the country, and FR now KNOW that he will. Bet on it! When asked by host Bob Schieffer how he would force federal judges to comply with congressional subpoenas, Gingrich said he would send the U.S. Capitol Police or U.S. Marshals to arrest the judges and force them to testify.
