NBC/WSJ poll: Romney Struggles With Primary Voters, Gingrich With General Electorate
By Mark Murray, Deputy Political Director, NBC News
WASHINGTON - Exactly three weeks until the first Republican presidential nominating contest in Iowa, front-runners Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney have two different challenges, according to a new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll.
Romney faces a challenge with the Republican primary electorate, trailing Gingrich nationally by 17 percentage points as nearly two-thirds of Republicans view him as either liberal or moderate.
Gingrich, meanwhile, faces a challenge with the general electorate, as half of all voters say they wouldnt vote for him in November, and as he trails President Barack Obama by more than 10 percentage points in a hypothetical contest -- compared with Romneys two-point deficit versus the Democratic incumbent.
Romney has not caught on [with Republican voters], says Democratic pollster Peter D. Hart, who conducted this survey with Republican pollster Bill McInturff. And Gingrich is so deeply flawed.
I think the Republican Party for the next four months is on the razors edge, Hart adds. Here is a year where they have a superlative opportunity to capture the White House. The question is whether they will self-destruct.

Been here since September 3, 1998 - 3 1/2 months before you.
And Gingrich still needs to shape up if he wants to win.
That true, we will unite behind our candidate once they are chosen. I for one will fight like hell for anyone unless it’s Romney or Paul.
Post #21 is irrelevant to the concept that polling this early in the cycle when the President is presiding over a poor economy doesn’t mean squat.
Also you missed the whole point of how the internals of the poll you are touting are essentially crap ie skewed to Obama. Do you really believe the generic pub dem split is 30-24 in favor of the dems?
Are you unaware that polls of all adults skew more dem than polls of registered voters and that polls of registered voters skews more to the dems than polls of likely voters?
This poll also doesn’t seek to measure how strongly motivated voters are this year, the ‘enthusiasm’ factor.
So if you have an agenda fine, but baseless BS and childish analysis doesn’t fly without being challenged around here.
I repeat below an old post where I was engaging in wishful thinking....It's my dream, crazier things have happened.
Because of the overwhelming bias against Palin by the MSM there is just one way I see her ever becoming president.
She makes a deal with Newt, she endorses him and then he picks her as VP.
He serves 2 years and resigns for whatever reason, she becomes president and the MSM is powerless to stop it.
She becomes immune to the main charge that she is unqualified after serving as president and turning in a great performance.
She serves 10 years in office, 2 + 4 + 4. We have Palin until 2023!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :-)
Dont think for a second that Newt is not shrewd enough to pull this off.
I think Newt would be satisfied with 2yrs as president...forever after known as President Gingrich, elder statesman and renowned historian...working the lecture circuit.
“NBC/WSJ poll: Romney Struggles With Primary Voters, Gingrich With General Electorate [Newt: 50% No]”
Same problem Reagan had a year before the 1980 election. I specifically remember my mother calling him a “Reactionary”, and she remembers that too...as of yesterday.
Comparison to Reagan is unreal. The demographics were different, it was the Cold War era, Reagan was disciplined, telegenic, and did not scare voters away. Newt polices are super. He needs to discipline his rhetoric.
How many thousands of columns, editorials and rants will be written about this between now and next November, I wonder.
“Comparison to Reagan is unreal. The demographics were different, it was the Cold War era, Reagan was disciplined, telegenic, and did not scare voters away. Newt polices are super. He needs to discipline his rhetoric.”
LOL. I think you mean “policies”. Anyway, I agree, he does need to cool down a bit. Reagan did have that on him.
I hope I can say this without getting horse whipped, but I like Mitt Romney!
Yes- it was meant to be “policies.”
Obama will ask what happens the next time a Democratic President refuses to enforce a conservative 5/4 majority? Constitutional chaos in the making.
Obama must be deposed. That is the mission.
I will vote a straight R ticket, even if Lindsay Graham is the POTUS nominee.

“Newt is sloppy thirds, at best.”
Hey, is that you pissant????
“Obama will ask what happens the next time a Democratic President refuses to enforce a conservative 5/4 majority? Constitutional chaos in the making.”
I have no doubt that Newt would have a comeback to that...and I think that most Americans would be VERY HAPPY with that comeback, simply because they are sick of the courts acting like a dictatorship.
Yes, in a perfect world, the courts would punt on an issue like abortion, or anything else that could be handled by other branches (like regulating CO2)...but our courts are out of control, and I, for one, really don’t care if Newt ignores them.
I find absolutely nothing troubling about those numbers.
Newt has hardly started to tear Obama apart.... but he most certainly will.
When the rest of the folks catch up to the fact that it’s going to either be Newt or 4 more years of Obama, they WILL line up behind Newt.
I can’t even consider a Paul candidacy. My only worry about that old dried up geezer is that he runs third party and steals 3% that we really need. As for the rest I really don’t trust any of them including Newt. I plan to be on whomever wins from our side ass 24/7 so they don’t even even think about going rino. Its the only way.Republicans have to be beaten into submission or they cave.
I am a Newt supporter. However, if this poll truly reflects public opinion with regard to Newt we are hurt. FOX reported today that Newt said the attacks are “taking a toll” against him this statement is consistent with the poll results. The problem:What to do? The other Republican candidates simply do not have the weight. Lord! Can you imagine the Republican candidate being our lady of the crazy eyes!
