COUPEVILLE, Wash. (AP) At times, Colton Harris-Moore's two years on the run were euphoric the nights of beatific solitude in the woods, the soaring adrenalin rush of his first moments airborne in the cockpit of a stolen plane.
But most other times were far less glamorous: sleeping in portable toilets or culverts as he sought shelter from the elements and the police.
The youthful thief who rocketed to international notoriety as the "Barefoot Bandit" is done with both extremes for the moment. He was sentenced Friday to more than seven years in a Washington state prison after pleading guilty to dozens of charges, including burglary and identity theft, stemming from his crime spree.
Harris-Moore, now 20, showed no reaction as the sentence was delivered by a judge who took pity on his bleak upbringing at the hands of an alcoholic mother and a series of her convict boyfriends a situation she described as a "mind-numbing absence of hope."

The liberal judge feels sorry for him, so gave him the lighter sentence.
But he has always been such a good little boy...
I remember reading a article about him that made him sound like he was a genius?
Well, I am not that smart but I wouldn’t sleep in a portable toilet..
Even drunken hobos know to duck under a bridge.
Anyhow, he will write a book and maybe get a reality tv show so his 7 years (3-4 with good behavior?) is a small price to pay.
This one looks like maybe a bit of the milk of human kindness is called for. If he had been in the system and had a prior record, I might think differently, but he didn’t.
This sounds like a kid who was raised in horrible circumstances and didn’t have a clue. He may have now, and we’ll just have to see if he can turn it around.
If the kid had gone straight into politics he would be a great success by now.
He made the cops in San Juan and Island counties look like idiots for years. The San Juan County sheriffs had a stakeout where they almost caught him, but because he ran and they were all fat, overweight donut eaters her got away laughing! Pathetic that it took the Bahamian cops to catch Colton.
Haven't done a lot a camping in the cold have you?
The portable toilet may sound disgusting, but I bet it would provide a lot more shelter than the underside of an overpass.
Plus, overpasses are few and far between in rural areas. You do not want under a bridge -- you will be sharing that with a river.
Hobos would prefer porta-potties, but overpasses are a lot more common in urban areas.
See, here in Alabama, for that very reason, our fat, donut eating cops have to be excellent shots with their service revolvers! Why run when you can let the bullets do all the work?
WA State ping...
